RIP Ned Beatty, the guy in Deliverance and the US Senator in Shooter. Was 85.

Unfortunately, I always think of him as THAT guy in “Deliverance.”

It's unfortunate that the most remembered role was that scene in Deliverance. I watched the TV release with my dad as a kid, and the back half of that scene was deleted and replaced with a helicopter-level shot of the countryside with the echoes of him yelling in the distance.

Instead, try remembering him for his role in Network.

Him in the movie 1941 with the anti-aircraft gun blowing up his house. Great in Network. God rest his soul!

He should have received an Oscar nomination for the Deliverance role.

And don't forget him as "Dean Martin" in Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield. Great movie.

No, he did not. Beatty was nominated as best supporting actor for Network, but he did not win. The award that year for best supporting actor went to Jason Robards for All the President's Men.

Beatty always said he liked character actor roles best. Roles an actor can bite into and usually not get typecast. He was good at them.

"Deliverance" still unsettles me sometimes.

It's got a great song, some great views, and some great lines, but it really paints Appalachian Americans in a bad way with those mountain men. In today's day and age, and of another ethnic group, that wouldn't fly. I've got some fairly rural in the hills relatives, and it sometimes irks me a little how that and similar things got done.
