The prettiest one's engine gets painted
Col,
Speaking of hi jacking threads. I've heard on and off over the years about the vanity mirror blinding people when it's on a drop top. Well my 69 442 drop top came with one.So there. I am concious of it's potential danger and don't drive with it in the Up/blind positon when I have the top down. But it came from the factory with it.

You had to remind me Erik...she is green...
Not mine though, even though I feel we have bonded after how close we've been lately.
I have now named her "The Green Slime" after all of the slime I've been cleaning off of her for the last two days straight.

I scraped off the shevy stuff then Purple Power and scubbing and more scraping with whatever fit and worked. After that dried I wiped and scraped off the heavier tough stuff with paint thinner and a choice of weapons. I did the pan too, I know....
I have to wire brush and scotchhbrite then blow it off and prep sol and should be ready for paint.
I'm not taking any more off than I have to, PS pump was a PITA, bad enough I had to take off the thermostat housing off so I could put on the tower clamps.
The plugs and didtributor were in originally when they painted it.
The bypass hose looked like a small animal chewed it to length anyway.
Aluminum water pump?
If it were my car I would of pulled the engine to do this.
The Prettiest One hasn't been messed with much and the more I clean the better she looks. The starter is original, assembly line paint marks all over the place, suspension looks original, nothing replaced could be encrusted with an inch of grease and dirt amalgam like that in less than 38 years.
It's not the engine therefore not my job, putty knife and degreaser and start scraping and wiping, it's easier than the engine, sort of fun to reveal actual cylindrical bar shapes Sandy.
Just get ready to spend a lot of time flat on your back working when you decide to do it.
Teepo
doesn't have a lot of wear, exhaust manifold locks look original and clean, heat tube shroud is nice, hard lines look real good underneath too, no encrustation.
The booster has a greenish paint mark, steering shaft has an orange red mark, top of the trans by the engine has a red? mark, probably more on the suspension to be found.
Can I take off the hood pad Sandy??????????????????????
How do you keep your hair clean working under that hood???
And black shows everything too.

Oh My Gosh!!!! Look at those pictures! I just don't know what to say.Yes... by all means, take off the hood pad! It's ugly and nasty... Just don't tell me what you find under there, LOL! I try not to touch the hood pad when I'm working under there, and I keep my hair clipped up on the back of my head!!
So what do all those different color marks mean?? The booster is ugly.
It's nice to know that some of her parts are original and still looking good, even if I don't understand what they are or what they do.

I'm gonna call and order those other parts tomorrow, so they should be here on Wednesday.
You are doing a most excellent job and my heart is soooo happy!

I'm sure "Teepo" is very happy to be bonding with you, LOL!!
I scotch'd the fuel line.
I got a little more done.
Took off the hood pad and it does weigh about ten pounds.
There was adhesive on every section of the hood and some on the edges, nothing like the assembly manual.
There was surface rust under every furry glue mass when I scraped it off, should of left it.
It must trap moisture between the adhesive and the hood or that stuff eats the paint off and open for rust.
This sure is above and beyond but I sanded off all the rust and prepped and painted it and all the edges where the pad doesn't cover so my engine would be prettier.
It only took an hour , a lot less time and grief than trying to explain what it needed to somebody.

I got a little painting done today, themo housing is just sitting there, I didn't forget the hose to the water pump.
All the brackets are painted, nuts and bolts are all wire wheel cleaned and cleared, not much left to do but fun stuff.
After dinner I rewrapped the engine harness with harness tape, and cleaned the exposed wires off with lacquer thinner for kicks.
I dropped the coil bracket bolt and it never hit the floor, lucky I've got several.
Found the nut for the dashpot down in the manifold, I didn't have a fine thread nut that size around, how fortuitous.
There are a bunch of extra nuts and bolts that aren't for anything I can find?

The "prettiest one" gets a makeover! Lookin' good Allan!
I know this is probably a stupid question, as only stupid people ask stupid questions
, what about the fill tube, wait, let me guess, when the new tag comes, you'll take it out and do it.....
... call me stupid.....

WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Look at that!! Is that just beautiful or what???

I'm just - God, I don't know what I am, LOL! Look at that beautiful gold paint!!!! This just brings happy tears to my eyes! My God. That just makes my heart soooooo happy! I just can't quit looking at the pics, LOL!!
And the wires look so neat and nice..... And you painted the inside of the hood too?? My God!! I certainly didn't expect that!! Those rusty spots by the front edge of the hood were just ugly and they made me sad. I was going to try to do that job. That's why I got the prep-sol and the under hood black paint. I figured it would take me a whole weekend or longer to do it. If I'd have known you were going to do that too, I'd have brought the other can of black paint and the rust encapsulator stuff out with me!
I probably would have freaked out trying to take the hood pad off.... I didn't know it was glued on! I thought just those round things held it on! I have new round things for the new pad, but I don't have glue.
You have done an amazing job - not that there was a doubt in my mind - it just exceeds what I thought it would look like, and I knew it would be beautiful!!
I just can't describe how happy I am!!! Thank you so very much!!!
Allan is doing a remarkable job and Teepo must be grinnin' from fender to fender. Sure looks great. Can't be easy achieving a result like that without pulling the engine...but the Bluevista has done it!

Colonel..... I think my face is frozen with a smile that will be there forever, LOL!!! I'm trying real hard not to pop any arteries, but I make no promises! Isn't it just beautiful??? Isn't he just wonderful?? And he painted under her hood too!!
She is very happy - she just feels new again, LOL!! Did I mention it's beautiful???

So do you like it so far Sandy??
It turned out better than I thought it would, I amaze myself sometimes.

Just have to paint those retainers for the valve cover wire holders when you get them and stick those on, I bet you could handle that Sandy.
You knew about those rust spots, very good .
It was all surface rust so no worries, I didn't paint the whole underneath of the hood, just the rust spots and whatever can be seen, pad covers it and the paint is okay. I put on the new booster line retainer thing and it works. The wire also clips into that and the clip was right there on the wire, I love it when a plan comes together.
I hope to get her all back together later today and if all goes well (knock on wood) be running tomorrow or maybe this evening.I was told the oil fill tube is supposed to be natural on a '72 350?

Should I paint it?? It don't matter to me but speak now or forever hold your peace.
I like it personally, can't chip the paint.

The Vista's paint may be finished Saturday. Laura surprised me and stopped at the body shop today to get my service manual out of the Vista so I could put Teepo back together.

She said the tailgate and driver's side doors were off and they were working on the jambs, I'm freaking out even more!

I have to learn to let go, not used to having anybody else touch my cars, house or wife...in that order.

Yes, you are wonderful! Still a shi*, but wonderful, LOL!! I think I like it... Just a little bit, LOL!!!! I was still smiling when I went to bed last night! God, it's just soooo beautiful!
No, I don't want the oil fill tube painted... I like the patina look! I ordered those things from Fusicks yesterday, so they should be here tomorrow.
Wolfie..... I have a new hood pad. It's been in the garage since February! I never opened the box to see it. I don't know how it will stay up on the hood now, cause I don't have glue??

you need those big round plastic push in tabs for it , then just a little spay glue here and there to hold it.
maybe Allen has some spares or he can pick them up at any auto store.

Looking real good! What will you do about the manifolds?
Keep posting the detail pics so I can paint my 350 right in a couple years when the A/C stuff gets pulled for resto. I have the paint, hopefully it will not be dried up before i get to use it...
Maybe Allan will be up for taking a painting vacation in dallas...
DAP Weldwood contact cement works great - brush on, wait 20 minutes, and stick! Should do good with that thick pad.

Wow! Excellent Job! Looks great. I try not to look under the hood of mine.
X2 on the Weldwood. Got some on my fingers right now from my upholstery gluing last night. Good stuff.

Lookin good Blue. I can just see Sandy jumping up and down with joy like a little kid. You now have several people lining up to get their engines painted, sounds like your about to make a career change

Thanks for the compliments.
You know what?.. A 72 is different than a '71.
I went to put the PS pump amd alternator brackets back on and they were nothing ike the '71 assembly manual. It took me a couple of hours to figure it out *%$ # @*^ it.

I knew I should of taken pics.

I'm too tired to take pics now but will get some soon.
My butt is draggin'.
I thought this would be the easy part.
Damn green cars.

Butt on the ground
Butt on the ground
Lookin' like a fool with my butt on the ground.

Fusick and their fusick'in oversize clamps for the smaller heater hose.
No way do they work, the others bend over like pretzels unless you use a lot english when you tighten them.
I had some smaller ones I got for mine and ended up using them..dammit.
I had to boil the ends of the larger heater hose to go over the fittings.
It reminded me of lunch at the gas station, same pan was used to boil bypass hoses and hot dogs, those were the best hot dogs I ever et, the heater hose residue and hunger added something to the taste.

Hunger is McDonalds secret ingredient.
Tomorrow, tomorrow, I hope
she's done tomorrow, it's only a day away.

Well at least you still have some sense of humor, which is a good thing! I suppose she learned lots more new words today, huh??
I'm sure she still loves you anyhow!!
I'm sorry she gave you a hard time..
she must have liked her red hoses, LOL!! Do you want me to send you some of the pictures I've taken under the hood so you can see the brackets?? I wasn't sure about those funny looking clamps - never heard anything good about them.
But they are "correct"! I just hope they hold the hoses on when they get hot!
I will gladly replace the ones you used!! That was mighty kind of ya!!
Those straps/clips - whatever I ordered from fusick'in Fusicks (Lol) should be here tomorrow... do you want me to bring them out tomorrow evening? What ever you need me to do, just let me know!

So did you have hot dogs for supper??
You don't need to post any pics tonight.... just take it easy and get some rest.
Butt on the ground.... you crack me up!

So I've heard.

I was really moanin' and groanin' wasn't I?

All back together, tested and it doesn't leak.... now, I hate when I forget to torque down the thermostat housing.
I love when you tighten the bolts and the leak stops.
I was having nightmares about those tower clamps leaking but they're all holding, knock on wood.
I only backed it out of the garage to clean all the grease off my floor and put her back, I'm taking no chances with a road test.
Have to test it when you get the car Sandy.
The thing is when you can pick it up, my car may be finished Saturday and the weather is supposed to be bad Friday, rain later today. Tomorrow afternoon/evening is supposed to be cooler but dry.
If you get the stuff the tabs have to be painted ,they go under the bolt on the middle top of the valve covers, need a small socket or nutdriver, just snug them down a little. The small straps snap in the hole on those and the lift loop for the wire going across, the right strap snaps in then is like a zip tie sort of deal. The battery hold down clamp is easy to do if you have a 1/2" wrench or socket, I put a temporary one on. You can do those or I can do them. I can do them when you pick her up in about 15-20 minutes, no need to make another trip unless you want to.
I didn't wash or wax her or anything, you can handle the Redgoat prints that may be around here and there.

My biggest fear was busting the front plate frame crawling in and out from under the front end...about a hundred times.
I pulled all the plastic, and blankets, and fender covers, and grizzly skins off and she looks no worse for the wear.
I'm sorry I had to cover up the engine with all those brackets and hoses and stuff.

Redgoatstiltskin gave you your wish for a golden engine but now he gets your first trophy in return, Boowah ha ha ha!!!!.

It's really beautiful now that it's finished.
If anybody else wants their engine done I figure about 1500 bucks should cover it.

If my Vista's bodywork turns out good with paint on it I'd rather do that.
I'll get it ready for paint, no rust repair, 12,000 bucks.

The engine and underbody are extra, 18,000 bucks.

Ooohhhhh..... Look at her!!!! Is that just beautiful or what???I thank Redgoatstiltskin (LOL) and Bluevista from the bottom of my heart!!!
I'm sure you have earned the "Coveted Jamesbo Award" and this one is from me!!
You are the bestest!!!!! Will send you a pm.......
Jamesbo's Award
Yeah Blue,
You do deserve the much coveted Jamesbo's award [as well as those poor guys at Fusick's]
I asked Dave the other day if he knew Sandy and he started to stutter.
Only,
I have some concerns as to what we're gona talk about next week. We may have to go back to the recipe de jour.
