Power Tour 18
Power Tour 18
Destinations are out for the power tour this next year. Bowling Green to Chatanooga to Birmingham to Atlanta to Darlington to Raleigh to Concord NC. Both the AL and GA stops are to white-flight safe suburbs of the big cities, not the city centers themselves.
May do this with my old man this year. I can get from Evansville to BG in 2 hours, and can get from Concord home in a day. 442 is still a project, so I'd take my Monte Carlo, which enjoys highway driving with 2.73s. Needs tires, tuneup, belts, hoses, lube, servicing various fluids and charging the AC up a bit, but all that can get done in the spring. He'll be 73 then, so good time to do it with him. Made some hotel reservations that I can cancel later, just in case.
Not too horribly worried. Car needs a paint job, and a ~$15k Monte Carlo won't be the first thing stolen, plus I'm aiming for nicer hotels as I have a lot of Hilton perks from my business travels. As I understand, you get up in the morning, leave your hotel, cruise a route in sort of a loosely organized mob of hot rods in an ad hoc rolling car show, stop when you get hungry for lunch, then roll on to the destination city. Big party at the venue for the evening, then go to your hotel, sleep, and repeat the next day.
Any advice or fun stories?

I've done it the previous four years. Anywhere from 2 to 5 stops, I'd like to Long Haul sometime. I may pass on the 2018 trip though, the starting point is kind of far (not too bad) but it only goes farther from Chicago. I'm looking to buy a house this year as well, so I have to be frugal with my time and financial commitments.
That all said, it's a freakin blast! The venues are cool, but it's the daily drive that makes me do this four years in a row, alone.
