Oldsmobile now Twinkies

It looks like the Twinkie is going the way of beloved Olds!
I can tell which one I would like to have back!

I suspect they're both victims of the same thing:
Upper level mismanagement and failure to plan.

If Olds had been given proper R&D dollars to keep up with modern demands, they would have had a chance to make a modern version of the great cars they made for years.

If Hostess had seen that the bright light coming at them was the locomotive of the healthier-eating train, and not the tractor-trailer of the next guy loading up on mass quantities of Wonder Bread and Twinkies at Sam's Club, they might have come up with some new foods people wanted to buy.
Heck, even McDonald's is now offering all sorts of salads, wraps, and coffees, along with "high-end" burgers, in addition to le Big Mac.
I mean, honestly, how often do you guys eat a Twinkie, or a SnoBall, or one of those fruit pies?
I used to have 'em a few times a week when I was a kid, now it's about once every 2-3 years, and, no, my kid doesn't eat 'em either - he lives off of other junk foods, but just isn't into those (and none of his friends are, either).

Look on the bright side, though: if you buy a few boxes now and stick 'em in the back of the closet, in fifty years your great-grandchildren will be able to know exactly what they tasted like .

The news reported the closure was due to strikes that crippled HOSTESS's ability to meet production needs. Wonder if it was the bakers again. http://newtown-pa.patch.com/articles...elves-d9697eed

EDIT: Eric I see you got in just before me. IMHO I don't think healthy eating choices has anything to do with the demise of Hostess. Look around and see how many folks walk out of 7-11 or a convenience store with nothing but 'healthy eating choices'.

Well we know it wasn't because of the short shelf life of Twinkies

You know what's really weird? I've never (Cross my heart and may lightning color the rest of Erics BMW black if I'm lying) had a ho ho or twinkie! Guess that's cause I'm not a dessert guy. And if it doesn't look like chips, nachos or beer it's gonna be a loser in my books. So I guess I must be one of those guys who contributed to their demise? Naw - bought tons o' Wonder Bread. Now it's got a whole new meaning. Like "Gee, I wonder what bread to buy now?"

I think your comment matches Erics to a tee!

Yep, under the new brand name "Twingies"...

Personally, I love both Twinkies and Ding dongs. I just do not eat much sweet stuff anymore. I think Bimbo has been outselling Hostess for a while now. Scarey....

Да, но я не американский. Почему в этом мире вы думаете, что я из России? Я даже не говорят на этом языке. Нет, мой друг, я из Канады. Эти сладкие закуски просто не были частью того, как я вырос. Просто возиться с тебя!

Uh huh....I like Tim Horton's hot donuts - does that count? Saw on the news yesterday a shop in the US selling special donuts filled with booze. IIRC the shop was called 'Drunken Donuts'. Made me hungry....

No need to freeze them. They have a shelf life of at least a 100 years.

Looks like your old "Twinkies" lunchbox up in the attic will be worth something...

...providing that they do not get bailed out by the guberment....

I sure hope the latter is not for real.

Well if you really miss twinkies, remember wally world sells a clone of them.

Based on how well they cloned the "Little Debbie" snacks, I bet they will be a perfect sub.
I am surprised there had not been any patent infringements or anything yet.

Im brand loyalist. I have tried many other fruit pies but nothing beats the hostess brand. As for twinkies im suddenyl craving one havent had one in probably a solid 13 years. Chocolate milk and twinkies kick @$$ from what i remember.

I'm sad about all the lost jobs and inexcusable politics behind it, but otherwise, good riddance. I'm 34, and have struggled with weight almost all my life. I won't miss them and I don't need to eat them. Besides, I'm sure someone will buy the brand name.

There is going to be more jobs lost than what is being reported and another American Icon gone, piece by piece America is disappearing. Copper cutlass hit the bell with the twinkies and chocolate milk, I remember in High School eating them sitting in my 442 before school started, breakfast of champions. But it really is sad to see this country disappear, Dardin restaurants just said they will cut all full time workers to part time so they can stay open. I see big problems coming very very soon!!!

I haven't eaten twinkies since high school, but I still think it's sad that they are going out of business, especially for above mentioned reason.

This is a good point, but it's been going on for a while now. Conserving our national heritage seems to be out of style these days, silly as that may sound in the context of desserts. At least there are still Oldsmobiles to be had. Try finding an authentic Twinkie a year from now. Maybe we'll be putting that shelf-life debate to the test. And nothing will be able to match the flavor of the shells on the pies. I bought a lifetime supply of everything I could find today. Sadly, the Twinkies were gone already...

The untold story is the other jobs that will be lost when those bakery's close. the local cafe will lay off a waitress or two, a checker at the local grocery, drug, hardware store will lose a job. Companies who sell raw product to the bakery's will cut back there labor force. The electrician, pipe fitter, and other service companies will cut back their work force. The ripple down effect is huge and is never mentioned.

Tastykake is a Philly thing. they have been going futher and futher out though. My mom worked there right after highschool (1972) and she said the quality was much much much better back then.

Never heard of "Tandy Takes" but they do make "Candy Kakes" My fav is the Peanut butter ones. Think of a Reese cup spread on a white sponge cake

Durned fur'ners.

If they'd eaten Twinkies growing up, and been about a dozen degrees of latitude further south, they'd see things differently.
