A couple of those ants attempting to return home, probably didn't think it was that cool. Nor did PETA. Luckily for that "artist", insects are the only animated beings which don't fall into any legislation. They are open season and you could do anything you want to them at any time.
I've read about Russian prisoners getting molten metal poured down their gobs, when the Japs captured them early in the 20th century. However, I've never seen any documented proof. The resulting casting might look somewhat similar. But, nothing Christmas tree-like like that Japanese looking casting in that video.
I will admit, though, that I would have done something like that on some gopher tunneling. One could get pretty ticked off, when your potato plants suddenly die off and you discover the tunneling afterwards
