Just when you think

these people cannot get any more stupid...

http://www.gazettevirginian.com/inde...-called-absurd

A CDL to operate a farm tractor. And a DOT license number for it too.

Whether you farm or not, this nonsense needs to be stopped and stillborn. Next thing they'll try to do it to a damn lawnmower.

If this isn't a case of a guvmink wonk doing a job justification, nothing is.

I agree. This is so stupid. I learned to drive on a farm.

I agree, a CDL for farmers is just crazy.

But I think is not just a CDL issue - read below.

Quote from the article:
'The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which is a part of DOT, wants to adopt standards that would reclassify all farm vehicles and implements as Commercial Motor Vehicles.'

What this is really saying is another TAX! The government is sliding this in instead of another tax increase. Be prepared for more and more taxes. This is just the beginning!

Is this the 'Change' you voted for?

Very stupid I have a nursery/farm. Trucks are classified farm but are under 26000. So no cdl. The difference in tags and insurance is huge. This is nothing but mo money.
What is next cdl's for Amish Horse & Buggies.

This is so stupid. What about all of the under age kids that drive the equipment to and from the fields to help Mom and Dad out? They'll never be given a CDL (min age 21). And all persons that want a CDL now have to go through an FBI background check. How many would that preclude from getting one?

This is getting WAY out of hand.

Just goes to prove that, as is often the case, the people pushing this thing have absolutely no clue about the unintended consequences. I can about promise you not one of them has ever been within 50 miles of a working agricultural operation.

Makes me glad I took the tobacco buyout and said the hell with running the farm. And no, contrary to popular belief, the tobacco farmers (and dairy farmers, and grain farmers, and all the others who were offered buyouts to discourage and control production) didn't all become millionaires.

Cruiser has seen between the lines. Another insidous stab at raising revenue, and with the background check requirements, another insidious way of "monitoring" the population.

In addition to that, how the hell would you log the miles you travel? Lot's of farm vehicles (tractors, combines) don't even have a speedo. And since when do you need a license to even drive a car on your own land? $$$ Grab IMO.

You don't, but you can't always reach the fields by driving across the land.

The machines that dont have speedo's would have to track the hours. Those are monitored on some tractors.

I understand your point, but common sense should prevail. If you can drive across a field, you can certainly drive across a highway. Up here farm vehicles are covered under the Farm Machine Husbandry. There are certain hours that they can't obstruct traffic, and they have to display a slow moving vehicle sign. Other than that there's no retarded incentive to change it.

Licence Plates - Farm Equipment
HTA 7, Reg. 628

Farm tractors do not require plates.
A plate is not required on a SPIH when travelling from farm to farm or to or from such places as are necessary for the repair or maintenance of the vehicle. Farm to farm includes farms not owned by the owner of the SPIH.

The only other law about this in Canada is that Husbandry here prohibits anyone under the age of 15 from operating the SPIH on a highway.

Fully understandable to have an hour meter on the vehicle. That's how you determine maintenance cycles.
