Indy 500 dodged a bullet today.

Wreck today in the Indy 500. Wheel detached from the car and went over the stands into a parking lot.
Someone would have been killed if it had gone into the stands.

Hope no one was killed w/ that flying wheel. I've sat as a spectator.

No fatalities is what I heard - not certain if that is correct.

Damn that is unreal how that flew by everyone. That flying wheel had deadly force. Kissing the wall in an open wheel car would be so scary. Any car but especially an open wheel car.

Your body would explode like an IED. Honestly, that wheel was more likely traveling ~170mph after it departed the car.

The last time that happened, that resulted in the 72 Hurst/Olds being the pace car as no brand wanted to directly pace in 72 as the 71 Dodge product went into the stands and I think it killed some people.

No more celebrity pace car drivers after that, only retired Indy Car drivers.

Oh, my thoughts on Indy 500 seating. Up high, in the shade, in the beginnings of Turn 1. You can see Turn 4, the main stretch, Turn 1, the small straight to Turn 2, and Turn 2. Also, if crap happens, it's at the end of the turn, not at the front. I went to the 2012 race with my old man, and every wreck was in Turn 1.

you can see the wreck on YouTube. If I remember correctly, the driver of the car was an owner of a dealership in Indianapolis. Supposedly, the had an orange cone somewhere on the track as a msrker where he would know when to start slowing down the make the exit. He said someone moved the cone causing him to mid this point of no return.

Id post a link if this forum would allow me to.

Another example of high performance car, low performance driver.

No injuries, it was reported that the wheel hit a white sedan parked in that area and bounced harmlessly away.

So I am sure someone here has the answer and it's just trivial but what would that wheel and tire really weigh? No way eighty pounds. Still a bullet but I am curious what it would really weigh.
