Hotel in NJ
Is anybody here from the Newark NJ area?
I am wondering if sombody can recomend an hotel/motel in this area.
Must be clean, reasonabled priced, must have parking space available and located so we can get to NY by some kind of public transportation easily.
Are going to drive from NJ to Seattle this summer, and the plan was to spent a day or two in NJ before we start driving.

Don't know about reasonably priced (kind of a judgement call) but if East Rutherford NJ would work for you there is a very nice Sheraton right off the Interstate that I have stayed at many many many many times while on business in the New York City area. Thank God I'm retired and don't have to do that anymore.... It's about 15 miles north of the Newark Airport and about 15 miles from downtown NYC.... hope this helps or gives you one option to consider... good luck and enjoy your drive across our beautiful country...
I guess the message here is to get out of Newark as fast as you can.
I was looking for a place not to far from Newark airport, and not to far from NY.
East Rutherford look like a good location. Thanks

I stayed at a homewood suite about 30 minutes from the airport and apparently 20 minutes from NY for work once. Nice hotel, nice area... had a free beer and continental dinner. I think around $99 a night (might have been corporate rate)

The last leg of our flight back from Cancun was to be from Newark to Syracuse was a few weeks ago. They cancelled the 9:15 PM flight at 9:00 PM (after a 4 hour layover) and United put us in the local Ramada. The place is a sh!thole. Whatever you do don't stay there (and don't ever fly United

I will agree that Somerset is nice, it's only the 6th richest county in the US, number 1 richest in NJ
Somerset is no way 20 minutes from NYC. My ex in-laws live in Hillsbourgh which is about 10 minutes south of Somerset and it's a good hour from NYC. My ex's grandmother was buried in a huge cemtery in Queens and it took 1.25 hours from Hillsbourgh, going 70 the entire way, with no traffic

generally Speaking there are many places to stay both north and south of Newark, that is still reasonably close to NYC, I live near East Brunswick, and work in Manhattan. I take an express bus which during rush hour takes an hour and 15 minutes to midtown. Rutherford is a good choice too, depends what you want to do in manhattan, general sight seeing no problems finding a way to NJ after club hopping could be a problem, I mentioned East brunswick because then you are also very close to the jersey shore..... and Englishtown Raceway, and reasonably close to NYC by express bus ( about 7 bucks each way, 45-50 minutes from e brunswick to midtown) and about 20-30 minutes to Newark.
When in Manhattan you "might" want to stop by the Norwegian Seaman's Church ( 317 east 52nd street) just saying

be prepared for sticker shock adult beverages will be half priced here in the states compared to Norge...
makes for a pleasant visit...
as you are deciding Quality inns are good, Holiday inns, holiday in express are all good hotels/motels.
and if you go down to the shore

I live in this area and can tell you that Newark, and the surrounding Airport area is no Beverly Hills, however, there are a number of Marriott brand Hotels near the Airport that are new, clean and safe. Try the Marriott website and look for a hotel that is NOT the Airport Marriott. There is a Springhill Suites or something like it nearby - you'll be fine.
Come to think about it,the company I work for have an assembly /warehouse fasility in Somerset.I will find out what hotell they use for visitors.
An hour with bus is ok.
Just general sightseeing.Kanskje en tur til sjømannskirken for ei vaffle.
Arriving in the afternoon, picking up the rentalcar, drive to the hotell, sleep overnight ,one day in NYC,the next morning heading west.
The prices in US are low, compared to what we are used to over here.
I did live in US for a while around 1980 ,but I did not get to see a lot of the country.Mostly Washington state and Alaska.
I guess this time I get to see a lot flat landskape. Not much of that on the Norwegian westcoast.

I tried it once, and almost got thrown off the plane...
Newark is a great place... or it was 50 years ago.. In 1967, it had a "cleansing" when some of its residents rioted and burned a couple hundred blocks of residential housing. The only mistake that they made, was that it was their housing that they burned. Newark never recovered in my opinion. I left NJ over 40 years ago, and haven't been back since. I'll bet that I could still find my way around Newark, because nothing changes in Newark, except the population.
If I were to go back, and be looking for a motel, I would stay in places like Livingston, West Orange, Morristown... all which are relatively close by your requirement of distance to New York City, and are very safe communities.
