Good test of brakes

Out for a nice drive in very rural area. Going about 35 mph and approaching a intersection when this guy blows past the stop sign and almost broadsides me. I locked up the brakes and cut to the right. Solid skid marks. The guy says sorry I did not see you! I think how can you miss seeing a car this big . Seems any time lately when I take out one of the old cars I have a close call. Is it me or do any of you experience this?

Unfortunately, anytime you drive a classic you take the risk of something happening. All you can do is pay very close attention to what’s going on around you, carry lots of insurance, and hope for the best.

Todays drivers are too self absorbed, they are entirely too insulated from the outside environment, and have too many distractions available. That’s just a fact of life in today’s automotive world.

Just last Friday evening on the way home from dinner, I was behind a little foreign POS who was behind a pickup truck. As the truck slowed for a red light, the driver of the POS was apparently not paying attention to what was going on in front of him (likely cellphone related), then all of a sudden I see black stipes on the pavement behind the POS as he screeched to a halt, barely missing the PU.

Last summer I was out in the cutlass and stuck in traffic. All of the sudden I feel a slight bump from the rear. The guy behind had hit me! What kind of idiot rear ends someone in bumper to bumper traffic! Turns out he wasn't paying attention because he had his phone up and was taking a picture of my car.

At least the bump didn't cause any damage. Didn't even mar the bumper. It was at less than 5mph, probably only about 2. For about 10 minutes though, I was steaming!

I daily drove a 71 Cutlass for years and other than a few idiotic moves that required my avoidance it was a good vehicle to drive. No moss grows under my tires when I’m on the road and cars actually vacated the left lane on my approach and I noticed a lot of people reconsidered pulling out from side streets in front of me.
The family vehicle lineup changed, the Olds went away and I ended up driving a Jetta. Talk about invisible! No longer did anyone move out of the left lane, there seemed to be a conspiracy amongst others to reel me in to close proximity and then change lanes across my bow, pull out of a side street or driveway regardless of how close a call it created.
