I too have noticed this trend. Breaking the "most ever" online multiple times over the last couple of weeks.
Was this site just featured in a magizine, computer game or something lately?
Or have the google bots fully locked on? It has been explained to me that most guests at any given site are bots, mostly good ones, but sometimes bad ones too.
Another theory comes to mind...recently the amount of time was increased for this site before it logs you off, this in itself could be the reason. The sum is collected using the new time figure instead of the old much shorter duration.

Way back when my friend received his first car, a 72' Cutlass Supreme that was his Grandfathers (260,000 + miles), then to his oldest brother, then the middle brother. He got ride of it in 1998 because the floor rotted out with over 400,000on it. Engine never had work but ran like a top. Just 3 rebuilt carbs and the usual fuel pumps, fan clutch, belts and a complete brake system (not so usual). BTW there wasn't a straight panel on that car when they where done with it. I think even the roof had a dent. Only regret was not taking a picture of the odometer. We took that car on weekend trips 3 - 350 plus miles and usually got the same look, "what where you thinking taking that wreck here?"
