Like I said, the Quebec labour board would have a field day with this one. Company just volunteered that they left employee records unsecured? Have your friend dream up any paperwork he'd care to fantasize concerning raises and bonuses to be awarded after 5 years service ... company can't pull his file to disprove it. A field day, I tell ya

I feel the workforce is changing since the downturn, where companies have been making large profits and keeping their employees held back. The world is changing and its happening on a small scale at the moment, however in the next boom employers are going to find that employees will be asking what can the company do for them/me rather then the company asking what you bring to the company. These changes are going to hit companies hard in the near future. Don't sign nothing unless its a collective agreement with perks and benefits. No collective agreement ask ?s what can you offer me in order to make me happy with the position your offering as to what I applied for. Keep up with the new world they all need workers to stay in business.

If you want to hire me, I'd love the job, but it looks like we need to strike while the iron is hot, for both of our benefit."

Excellent response.

Well...
My friend had to give up on the lucrative alternative offer since it was a slow process with nothing in writing. Also, the other company is in a worse/ similar climate- no improvement enticement- and it would require total disruption of the current lifestyle. Plus...

In what appears to be a scheme to avoid the appearance of singling out this one person, the company called EVERYBODY in and had EVERYBODY [re-]sign this NC agreement.

As for my friend, let's just say he's happy with the result and current situation. For now. And the NC form shouldn't be much of an issue anyhow, due to details that can't be shared.

So, "THE MAN" wins... for now.

Well, I hope that he finds a better place to work in the future.

I was discussing this with a co-worker today. We work for the number one automaker in the world, yet they underpay compared to nearly every other one out there. That's ok in today's times, because they didn't lay off or close plants during the recession, and that buys a certain amount of gratitude.

But, when we have to fight to get back to the compensation package we had 6 years ago, and we're still a couple years out from getting back to what we had when I started, it all depends on the economy. Stays crappy, well, it's a secure job. Gets better, then they will need to add some enticements to get people to stay, and those enticements will help, as they will only be done in panic mode after most of the long term players have left for greener pastures, and that buys me more relative seniority too.
