there was a lot of movie making history to that chase scene. it was the first chase that was filmed at actual speeds instead of speeding up the film for one. when they started they had to send the mustang out to be hopped up as it would not keep up with the charger. McQueen did alot of the driving himself, no suprise. if you watch the scene where he goes off on the shoulder and then gets back on the road you can see the rear end shifting fore and aft as the springs wrap up because he was on the throttle so hard and banging gears. still regarded as one of the top chase scenes in the history of movies. I guess all the CG junk they use today has nothing on the real thing.

that movie was built when men where men and still thrived on adrenaline. Kids my age nowadays wanna watch some steroid poping meat head drive a car that will never do in real life what it does in film . back then you could drive your charger hard and that movie didnt lie .

I think the original "Gone in 60 seconds" was the manliest of all car chases. They did most of the car chases "gorilla" style. Meaning grab a camera and lets go shoot some scenes. No stunt people, no traffic control, no road permits. The producer I think his name was George something, did all the car chases and stunts. The hollywood stunt fraternity didn,t want anything to do with the movie, they thought he was crazy. There is one scene were he loses control and hits a power pole at 100MPH. Not some stunt. He ACTUALLY hit the pole at 100MPH, nearly killed him. Another shoot had them going through a REAL Billboard. One of his stunt buddies said "what you do is build a cardboard fake billboard and drive through that" George thought that was too fake. So he drove through a real one. But great shot for the movie. If I recember correctly "george" was pretty messed up from that movie, broken back, neck etc,

I don't think they could ever remake those movies and get it right. I have seen the new gone in 60 seconds and it was lame. In both originals there was no big fancy effects all you had was guys willing to risk it all to get that shot.

yea the CG killed car movies IMO. I am more impressed with the old movies where they did the actual stunts with a real car. Smokey and the Bandit was filmed near here on GA400 (or at least parts of it). when they did the abandoned bridge jump the stunt driver hopped in the car, put on a cowboy hat and the stock seat belt and hammered down. the car had no saftey gear that didnt come from Pontiac. seems now the only "stars" in hollywood are metrosexual whiners who are scared to break a finger nail. as for Gone in 60 seconds that is another fine example of why to not remake a movie. they couldnt hold a candle to the original.

“Gone” is one of my favorite films. I bought a copy several years ago and it was the digitally remastered version. Totally screwed it up by dubbing in the sound of a highly tuned race engine when the original sound had a car with broken exhaust that fit the condition of the car.

If you have some time to kill, there's some trailers from his other movies at the web site along with the guy's bio and pictures of his wife.

Watch the chase scene many times a year. Have 3 copies.
Search Youtube for the remake with a new Charger and new Mustang.
Not as good but fun to watch. Even put in a VW bug in the scene.

If you watch the movie Bullit, during the car chase it sounded like Steve McQueen double clutches when he shifts. Kinda unusual to do that.

I have to double clutch my proshift modified gearbox to make up for the lack of syncro teeth. Maybe the Bullit mustang had the crashbox treatment on the tranny

Missed this post on 1st lap

There does seem to be one scene in Bullitt that it's speeded up; but for the most part, it's all real-time. It's prolly my favorite b/c on top of the great & famous chase, it has Steve and Jacqueline!

But every time this subject comes up, I have to give a plug for John Frankenheimer's "Ronin." If you've not seen this Bobby DeNiro flick and you like real chase scenes, "catch" it.

The other notable thing about it is that there are no fake audio tracks dubbed in... you really hear the Mercedes 6.9 and the Audi S8 engines revving as if they were leading the last lap of of a demolition derby. And there's a fabulous chase scene running against traffic that gives great shots of a 5-series Bimmer's suspension hanging on for dear life.....

Turn up the volume and catch it on DVD in at least Dolby Digital 5.1... w/ a good subwoofer!
