Batmobiles compete

A question that has been around for some years! Which is faster, the old original Batmobile or the New and Improved. Well here it is!

Hm, it would be nice if we actually saw the original Batmobile in the video. The original one is a Ford. Built loooong before the C4 Corvette was around.

The photo finish has the original Batmobile in the right lane but it was in the left lane when they started wasn't it?

Right you are, Mike! I had to go watch it again. Methinks there's something afoot here.

I've heard that besides the one original Batmobile, there were a couple replicas built by Barris, a couple authorized replicas built by others, and a slew of unauthorized replicas. I saw a website once that was selling the body shell as a kit car to make your own original Batmobile.

I also read when the First Batman movie came out, that the frame and engine came from about a 63 Impala 283 the producers found in a junkyard in England. Somewhere along the way it morphed into a Corvette engine. I have a feeling both cars in the video are replicas.

I sort of thought the girl was a butterface.

Here's a guy that got the sound effects right on his fake Batmobile. He didn't use a small block.

The cars could not do the times and speed quoted, based on the hp numbers given. But fortunately in the end, it was a wash.

I love the original Batmobile. Barris did a great job on it. The original car was built from a Lincoln concept car called the Futura, here's a link that tells you a little bit about it.

Yup, and I don't think it could do much more than get out of its own way. Maybe one of the Barris copies or fan-made replicas could, though. Saw a Bob Butts replica at the "Cops and Rodders" show at Devry in NJ a few years back, looked (and sounded) pretty good, couldn't say how fast it was though.

Why would you say this? The 390 is no slouch. Is it said somewhere that Ford built the car to no go hardly at all and that Barris never changed that? I can't believe that Barris would hand over a car that only crawled.

Maybe you were thinking about the Munster Coach or Dragula. I think they were pretty slow

I saw Barris about 5 yrs ago at the World Of Wheels in Boston. He had both Munsters cars set up.

There was no one at the table so I said to my dad (he's a 69 yr old auto body guy) let's talk to Barris. He talked to the two of us for about 10 minutes. Wicked nice guy. I bought a couple of black and white Munsters pics which he signed for me.

Nope, I was thinking about the original Batmobile, which was a monstrously heavy car (5500 lbs or more), and by all accounts I've read, far from a driver. In addition to being a pig, it couldn't handle worth a damn and was unreliable as well. It was, however, beautiful to look at.

My favorite Batmobile, well my son's anyway, is the pinewood derby Boy Scout car that I made with my die grinder out of the block of wood. We didn't "cheat" errrr, go creative on polishing axles and wheels, etc. so it didn't win the derby. Everyone liked it though since the movie had come out just before the derby.
