4th of July Car Show, Red Bud, IL

Hi guys,

I finally made it to an annual Car Show on the 4th of July in Red Bud, IL yesterday that I've been trying to get to for several years now. The show was a little farther away than most the shows I usually attend, almost exactly 60-miles one way, but it was a nice drive there in the morning with the temp at 76° at 0630. I knew it would be a different story driving home later between 3:30 and 5pm when the temp was supposed to be 96°, and no A/C in my car.

I got there early and was able to get a nice place in the shade, that also just happened to be close to 3 other friends I've made by being a regular on the local Car Show circuit. Getting a shady spot was a godsend later in the day. Probably the nicest thing about the show was getting to see several cars I hadn't seen before. It was a Class format type of show, and I was in what I'd argue was the toughest Class, 1964 - 1972 Muscle Cars. They were giving out 3 places per Class. In my Class 3rd place went to a '67 Dodge Coronet R/T 4-speed with a 440ci, 2nd place went to a '69 Boss 302 Mustang 4-speed car, and 1st went to a 1970 Chevelle SS 4-speed car with the famed LS6 454ci. They were all beautiful cars and I sure couldn't argue with any of the Judge's picks. It was a very fun show and I was really glad I finally made it there!

So, there will be 3 posts of pics, so please hold off on any comments until I get all 3 posts in please. I hope everyone had a great 4th and you enjoy the pics.

Chris - The hardtop Corvair brings a pain to my eyes. The convertible Corvair is lovely. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Norm - Yes, that gold Corvair is kinda fugly, but also kinda reminds me of something you might see some Hippies cruisin around in back in the day. Thanks for checking out the pics.

I can appreciate your comment regarding "Hippies", but that painfully fugly Corvair is more likened to a street banger. Note the chain-link steering wheel & dual spot-lights. Street banger.
I can embrace that 1953 GMC five-pane glass pickup w/ the curved Opera windows. I restored one 1976-1977.

Norm - I see what you're saying about the Corvair and agree. I remember you mentioning the resto you did on the 53 GMC. I love the 5 paned window trucks of that period.

So many nice cars that blue Cutlass convert -71 or -72 ? , the green Chevy -55 or the patina GMC stepside.
Thanks for sharing Chris.

Looks like a fantastic show.. love the patina 55 gmc with the corner windows.. also that ElCo is sharp, love the 66, I have a factory big block 67 ElCo. Prefer the 66 tho. Hey that gold corvair may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s still cool to the folks that built it or own it.

Thanks for posting, great pics. No complaints about seeing any Corvair, regardless of condition or style, how many times do you see one on the road? My dad's neighbor ran a Covair repair shop in the '60s-'70s and he always had all sorts of Corvairs sitting in the driveway. More recently, I helped another neighbor dig one out of a garage and got it running good enough to drive home a few blocks away. Strange and unique cars, too bad they were so under-engineered.

Ditto the comment on the black/green '55, that shade of green is about as close to my ideal "Prell Shampoo" shade of green I've seen on a car. Beautiful.

Glenn/BlueCalaiis79/Andy/JohnnyBs68S/67OAI - Thanks for checking out the pics and all your great comments, they are very much appreciated! I'm glad they conjured up memories of cars you have owned, or other cars you've seen before. I get a tremendous amount of joy out of getting to share pics of Shows I attended. This Show on the 4th was my 2nd in as many days. I was at a Show on the 3rd of July also and those pics are in "The Clubhouse" too if you're still hungry for more pics.

Dan - You're welcome, glad you enjoyed them. I can't say for sure where it's originally from because I didn't look at the vehicle specific info on the windshield placard, but I'd highly doubt the GMC was from Baldwin, MI. It was a pretty local show from the greater StL area. Probably 175 vehicles tops. Weird they just had Baldwin, M.. There is a Baldwin, IL just 9-miles directly East of where the show was held. I'm guessing that's where it's from.

If you blow-up (zoom) the image it becomes more clear what appears like an M is, in fact, Ill (Illinois).

Man, you're really busting my *****, especially when my very last statement was, "There is a Baldwin, IL just 9-miles directly East of where the show was held. I'm guessing that's where it's from." I had already done more sleuthing beyond my initial comment about the "M".
