1972 442/Cutlass

Did anybody watched Garage Squad on Velocity channel? They're restoring a 72 442 in somebody's garage. They dont even know if its a real 442 or a Cutlass.

Yep, ol Bruno doesn't have a clue, thinks that isn't one because it wasn't built in Lansing, what a dufus. The thing is, if it was a Fremont Ca. built car, the build sheet may be on top of the gas tank, therefore if W29 is listed on it, it would be the real deal. But his reasons for it not being a real 442 are pretty lame.

I watched that episode this morning. They replaced the gas tank with no reference to finding the build sheet. I don't recall them saying anything about the vin either or mentioning any numbers. If they did, perhaps I missed it.

I don't know why they thought putting a big block in was going to be trouble.

I really do like when old cars get resurrected. The first start blowing the shells, nuts and other mouse debris out the tail pipes is fun to watch.

I saw that as well. He said something about it not being a 442 because the "rear deck springs didn't pop right up" or something like that....what is he talking about??

The rear spoiler was added, as it was not available in '72, thus adding weight to the trunk lid, because the trunk lid did not "pop open" due to the added weight, he wrongly assumed that it meant that it couldn't be a 442. Where he got that in his head is anyone's guess.

Deck lid can be easily adjusted to open and stay up by adjusting torsion rods. Gee, mine does that so means it a real 442 built in Lansing? Oh look, an eagle.....

As Dan points out deck lid wings were not offered in 72. Even on real 70/71 442s the deck wing was not available on the vert models. And there were no CS 442s 70-72 based on the CS hardtop. Lots of folks out there selling 'the real deal one of none' CS ht 442 coupes.
