What kind of grease to you guys recommend for re-packing front wheel bearings on 70 442?
Whats the benefit of Moly grease?

 

I just buy a tub of wheel bearing grease at the parts store.

I've never had an issue with generic wheel bearing grease. Frankly, I suspect that properly packing the bearings is far more important than the type of grease, especially on older cars that aren't highly stressed. I took high school auto shop waaaaay back, just after the Earth cooled, and they taught us to force the grease into the bearings by pressing the bearing against a glob of grease in the palm of our hand.

 

I always buy disc brake/hi temp grease as it can be used with either.

 

I suspect that these days you'll be hard pressed to find a tub of wheel bearing grease that isn't disc brake/high temp.

 

Just the way that I learned to do it, so many years ago.

 

^^x3^^ Except the Earth had not cooled completely when I was taught the same manner of packing grease into bearings.

May I add a question here? what are you going to use for ball joints? same or something different?

 

Just a generic grease that comes in a tube for a grease gun.

The only caution is that certain types of greases should not be mixed.
There are, to name a few, calcuim, lithium, moly, & silicone based greases.

Some are not compatible with each other so it is preferred when repacking to thoroughly clean out the old & install new instead of mixing the 2.

 

I just use common ball bearing grease for the wheel bearings and ball joints on the suspension and steering linkage.

I still have the container of Quaker State wheel bearing grease purchased when my 68 Cutlass was new. It has a “firmness” to it compared to a container of Castro’s wheel bearing grease which looks like what you would put in a grease gun. It’s possible the QS goes back to my 56 Super 88. It was a few years ago.
