vent window (take 2)

i have talked to a few people and they've all kind of misunderstood. i am looking to replace the pivot post on my 68 cutlass vent window. i have attached the pictures to help clarify. Is this a practical fix or do i really need to get a whole new window frame? it seems two rivets would come from the inside of the frame (with flush heads) and into the back of the pivot. the pictures show the driver's side complete, and the passenger side missing (hence the need to replace it). i would really appreciate any input.

I've never had to do this, but what you plan will work. The bigger question is, where do you get a replacement post that doesn't already have a vent window frame attached to it?

right. a broken or otherwise goofed-up one perhaps. thats what i am trying to locate. i'm not opposed to replacing the whole frame if necessary. i'm just not sure it's necessary (hoping it's not). Anyone?

You don't want to replace just the post. The vent window can be easily replaced. If the glass is bad it comes right out of the frame, it's easy to replace. Finding a vent window frame should be EASY. Every 68 except (I think) a post coupe will work. If you get in a jamb I have a spare one but I'd rather not give it up because I'm a hoarder & I only have one spare

In order to remove the vent window you have to strip the door panel off to get to the vent window crank mechanism. Once you disconnect the crank mechanism (one bolt on the inside) you MAY be able to just rotate the vent window about 90 degrees and push down hard on the vent window to pop it out of the upper swivel point (the part that's broken on yours) . The problem is it's a very tight fit & I don't know if the weatherstipping will give enough with it in the car (you'll be squishing it against the door). It will be even harder to get the new one in. I took mine apart with the whole vent window removed from the car. In order to do this you have to remove the window too.

The job sounds worse than it really is

Once you remove the glass out of the frame to install the rivets you might as well just find another good frame and/or frame and glass and keep the broken one as an ornament or something to practice glass etching with...

Billy, I may be able to provide the glass with frame in good shape for a better price than that. Is this the drivers side? If interested send me a PM with your address and I'll see what I can come up with this weekend. John

Here's a passenger side for $50 & you can turn around and sell the convertible chrome frame to me for $50 if it's in good shape

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/65-66...item20b4466914

Driver's side $18

NOS one for $43 (it will be going higher)

The point is there are plenty for sale. I disassembled 4 vent windows and all the vent frames were in good shape. The problem is usually the chrome outside frames are pitted.

so, is this to say that the glass frames are the same for 65-68? if so, that opens up a ton of options.
