Tilt steering needs u-joint replacement

I need to replace the u-joint in my 68 cutlass tilt steering. The steering is pretty sloppy and I can hear the joint making noise as I cycle the steering wheel back-n-forth.
Anyone done this before. Is there a shortcut so I don't have to pull the column?

I've never done it, but if I'm not mistaken, the '68 is a unique column, and parts might be scarcer than for the rest of 'em. I believe it's essentially the same mechanism as the later ones, but completely different because there's no column lock.

Recently had a GM column doing the same thing - guy just tightened the bolts inside the column - fixed!

Did you take it apart to verify it is worn and not loose?

I haven't taken it apart yet. I have isolated the problem to the column.
I was hoping someone may be able give some lessons learned before I take it apart since I've never tried this before.

My 70 is loose as well and have been told by someone who used to rebuild tham that it is usually just loose hardware. I saw a write up soewhere on the net that showed how to do it but can't seem to find it at the moment. Google "tilt column" or "loose column". If I find it, I'll post it here.
The chassis service manual tells how to remove several of the parts you have to take out. You do basically have to take it almost all the way apart to get to the bolts that are loose. Great winter project. So great, I've been saving it for about 7 winters now.

The good news is that, if 68 is different(rare parts), I doubt that you'll need to replace anything. Just tighten them. I'd also recommend using some loctite when you do.
