New shocks, advice?

Need some cheap shocks to put on my car, but I don't want them to be horrid and squishy. I was thinking of some Monroe SensaTrac's, they seem good for the price. Eventually I'll yank off whatever and replace it with Bilstein B6 HD's, but they are way out of my price range for now.

Anyone got some advice? I don't know what is on the front now, but the bushing has exited the shock housing on the bottom of the front pass, and the rear oddball red shocks are pretty much shot as well. I think the shocks where put on within the past 10-150 years, the rear ones still have quite a bit of paint, but cheap shocks do not hold up well under these cars it seems.

Thanks in advance, the short drive I had in this car was bouncy enough, I don't want a car that hops.

Thanks, just wanted to double check, I had placed an order, but I've been having an issue with places telling my address is incorrect for my debit card. I'm going to have a rather annoyed discussion at whomever is at my bank that seems computer literate this week.

I had only thought after placing the order, and receiving an email that the order could not be placed, that I realized I had done little research on these shocks, though they do come recommended.

Side note, I could not survive without technology, yet I loath it so very much. I think that's why I drive such old cars, they are technologically stone age compared to anything today, and I like it that way.

The Bilsteins are great shocks, but for cheap and temporary, I'd recommend KYB Gas-A-Justs. You can usually get a set of four from shock specialty places for $100 shipped.
They handle better than your usual Monroes, but are still smooth and comfortable, but they won't last forever, and they lack the finesse of the Bilsteins.

I can't find 'em that cheap anywhere, cheapest I have found is $137, also, I have read some horror stories of people ordering them and getting ones made all over the place. China, Japan, Spain.. I don't mind the harshness people claim to get with the KYB's, it will help this car handle a lot better, but as I said, horror stories of getting mismatched oddball shocks. Also, the price isn't that great.

This is the cheapest place I have found them, Summits pricing is a lot higher. Also I'm somewhat certain those cheap Gabriel shocks are what are on the back of my car now, and they are very worn.

Awwwww crap, you're right.

The different series have the same model numbers.

Best I could find on the Gas-A-Justs was $145 shipped.

X3 on the KYB's. i put a set on the 94 Corvette I used to have and they were very good. If you put these on you will not need to buy Bilstiens.

No one's suggested you check out Rock Auto?? They sell KYB Gas adjusts and there's also a discount sticky on this site if you want an additional discount.

Hey! Just the messenger here. I was just going off the recommendations everyone seems to have for KYB.

If he just wants some less expensive shocks to do the job for awhile? O'Reilly has Monroe HD (front and rear) for 20.99 each.

Back to the original question, the Monroes will be fine for daily driving. I use them on several of my cars.

Well, seeing as I can't get them this paycheck anyway, due to my debit card being an impulse buyers worst nightmare (It doesn't work online half the time), I guess I'll just spend a little extra next check and try out the KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. Just hope they don't offer the spine jarring ride I've read about, or I'm going to be going at the speed of Grandma more often.

I had already checked Rock Auto, by the way. If the $137 includes shipping, then I'd definitely buy them at that price.

Ha ha ha! Their prices never include shipping. You find out that surprise when you go to the checkout.

That's good to know, that's one of the things I hate about modern cars, struts send every pebble into your spine. Hit a pot hole and you feel like you've just driven into a gorge.

You must have the low profile tires on larger rims? Normal sidewalls (75 aspect) really help with the ride, and contrary to what you're saying I find the ride on most new cars very smooth. Our roads must be smoother than yours....

I live in Southwestern VA, the roads are horrible here. As I said though, my car currently has 215/75R15's, they are not wide enough, so I'm going with a 235/60R17 soon as I can get some other things done to the car.

Well at least the Delta was built for comfort and you shouldn't feel your spine being jarred around as you cruise with it. One thing I do remember about those cars when they first came out was they weren't quite as soft a ride as their predecessors.

You should come here for a visit and see what real crap roads are like...we have contests to see which potholes have the least potholes in them.. Can't drive more than 80' without finding one of those suckers.

I had SensaTracs on a 97 Town Car & while they felt nice at first ...

They seemed to get a bit too soft over time, despite not many miles being put on the car.

Monroe's SEVERE SERVICE shocks seem to have a lil' more love :

Where I live, with three municipalities plus the state managing roads in one area, they vary wildly from "Hey this isn't bad", to "Am I in a third world country?". That plus none of the municipalities nor the state seem to know how to make a man hole, utility cover, or any other thing that is not part of the street flush with the street. Salem, the "Town" I live in is in the northwestern part of the valley, Roanoke is right in the middle, and Vinton is in the southeastern corner. Salem and Vinton do a fair job of keeping up the roads, Roanoke is nearly bankrupt, so they do not do a good job of keeping up anything. Plus none of the people tasked to plow on the rare occasion it does snow know how to plow without turning the road into a raked mess.

I'm sure the roads aren't as bad here, as there, especially with the horrid freeze and thaw cycles you get anywhere that far north, but lack of knowing what they are doing around here is what makes the roads horrible, that and the state not caring about this corner of the state. That's the problem of living in the state the US Gov has a lot of it's assets in, they care about their corner of the state, northern VA, and not southwestern VA. Oh, how politics can make my head, and back hurt.

Shocks

I have Monroe load adjusting shocks with coil spring #58574 on the rear of my 1972 Cutlass Supreme and Blisteins on the front. Rides good and stance is correct no sag.
