Merry Christmas! Upgrade your upper control arm bolt mount

I have a 68 442 w/455 conv 4 speed and my front end starter making a small clunking noise so i got suspicious and stated taking the upper control arm off that's what the problem was the bolts that attach the upper control arm are held in place with kind of like serrated on the edge of the bolt head and if you don't prematurely know it you will strip it or it's so rusted that the bolt spins on it's own. I thought to myself that this could be easily corrected so i did some engineering on making a large and thick washer TIG welded to the frame would correct everything. I bought the washers from SEPW (Small Engine Parts Warehouse) (800) 236-2333 product number is 1713089SM it will run you about $20.00 i had someone reduce the diameter from 2" to 1.20" then you will need to reduce the inside of the hexagon from 9/16' to 5/8" which i did while watching football as you only need to file 1/32" all the way around finally the TIG welding. The cleaner the welding surface the better the bond. If you don't feel comfortable doing it have a buddy or a business do it for you. I have yet to tig weld them put it's coming. If done correctly you will never have to worry about the cam bolts loosening up. I will post picture's of how far i have gotten. The best part about it is that many GM cars could benefit from the upgrade. I sincerely hope that some one on this site those it to their fine Oldsmobile. Merry Christmas.

That’s a nice fix.

One of those knurled bolts started spinning on my car. So I tightened it the old fashioned way, with a combination wrench on the bolt head and socket wrench on the nut.

I had two of them loose so i figured a permanent fix was needed. Make sure that the knurled portion slides inside the hole easily (you may need to use a small round file to enlarge it slightly) Antisize lubrication on the edges of the bolt head and the knurled portion is highly recommended as well. Also the cleaner the surface to be TIG welded the stronger it will be (i cant stress this enough). It's a permanent "better than factory" fix. You make want to remove the inner fender before TIG welding.
