Jeep GC Steering box

I have read some old threads regarding swapping out the steering box for a 92-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee one and having amazing results. Several people have done this for around a $100. I am wondering if they are (I assume) just getting one from a junk yard? If so isn't there a concern about getting a worn out one or are they pretty much risk free? Is it just the gamble you take or is there something I should know? I unfortunately recently had a rebuilt installed in my 69 Cutlass hoping it would improve things and honestly it is pathetic.

thanks,
Steve

Get a rebuilt one. Rockauto or a good known rebuild vendor. Dont forget to replace the lines, fluid and get the SAE to Metric adaptors.
Use Dextron ATF not the clear parts house fluid.

If you buy a quick ratio box from Rock Auto, you don't need the Lee adapters, your stock lines will screw right in.

I went to their site and couldn't find it. Are you suggesting an Olds steering box or a Jeep GC one? If you could give me a link that would be great.
thanks,
Steve

I took a look and am wondering which one you are referring to, 970, 971 race car, or 972 fast ratio?
thanks,
Steve

Does anyone have feedback on who to buy a rebuilt steering box from a supplier. Based on the 97 Jeep GC Summit is the cheapest using a Delco, Rock is similar on Delco, NAPA is $35 bucks more and has their own brand but the description sounds thorough. Napa is close so returning the core is easy. Is Delco better than Lares? I'm going to be returning a Olds gear do you think they will notice that the core is different? The Delco # is 19321354 can someone confirm that? Rock shows a #972 4 bolt fast ratio 10:1. unlike the other ones it doesn't say how many turns. I also wonder about whether I want a 3 or 4 bolt unit. My existing one has 4 bolt holes but the frame only has 3 holes. Any answers would be appreciated. thanks.

Hey Randi, looking closer I see the fast ratio, is that the one you refer to as quick ratio? The #972? I really need to wear glasses more often.

Yes, the 972 would probably be the one you want.

68-72s are 4 bolt boxes but utilize only 3 bolts.
Motor City or Inline tube carries the correct bolt.

I ordered the 972 quick ratio from Advanced and got a 25% off coupon. Since there is no shipping charge it wound up being $213 + tax. I can carry the core in and if there is an issue I can take it back. It seemed worth it to me. It should also be a direct fit, not additional parts needed, I'll see.
