Inner fender

Hey guys,

Here again with a question that I'm sure someone has asked at some point.

Im in the process of doing my freeze plugs without taking out the motor (I know, I know), what is the rubber-like material that is stapled to the inner fender?

My driver's side has most of it attached, and it seems to be too rigid to be rubber...maybe its just 43 year old rubber...

Thoughts? Or suggested replacement material.

Many thanks!

You got it....it is 43 YEAR OLD rubber. When newer, it's flexible, etc.

The "technical name" for the material is masticated rubber. It's a rubber sheet material with random threads running throughout it (for added strength/resistance to tearing).

These are available from the repro parts places like Fusick, Inline Tube, etc....I think they call them "wheelwell splash shields", "inner fender flaps", or something like that. Typical price for new/repros is $27 or so and they include new staples for installation. The "staples" they include are fairly stiff metal...so were the originals.

Just get new/repro versions and they should be fine for many years....wipe them periodically with some sort of vinyl treatment and that may extend their life.
