Frame interchange
Frame interchange
I currently own a 67 442. Several months ago a friend gave me a 67 Cutlass supreme 4 door. I have completly dismantled the car. I plan to restore the 442 in the future. Meanwhile I am considering restoring the frame and suspension from the 4 door so that I can do the body and drop it right on. From what I have found the frames are the same for two door and four doors. Can anyone confirm this?
Yes. however, there were two suppliers, A.O. Smith and Pontiac. If the bottom front of the crossmember under the oil pan looks like a top and bottom half welded together, both stamped to give the tongue that is under the center link, it is Smith. The Pontiac had a welded on piece in the front. The Pontiac frame won't have the two positions for the rear upper control arm through bolts like the Smith. note 67 is not the same frame as 66--for 67 they went to rear coil springs with pigtails on both ends; 66 had full diameter tangential ends at the top of the rear coils.
The 1964-67 cars used the same 115" wheelbase for 2 drs, 4 drs, and flattop wagons (Vistas were 120"). The 1968-72 cars used different wheelbases for 2 drs (112"), 4 drs/flattops (116"), and Vistas (121").
Thanks to everyone for their replies. I had a chance to check today and it is a smith. So it looks good. But I must say the idea of the boxed frame is tempting. And considering my brothers 66 lemans convertable is sitting in one of my garage bays. I wonder if he would miss a frame?
