455 Frame Mount Location

455 Frame Mount Location

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of replacing the 350 (the engine that came with my car) in my 1971 442 with a 455 (the engine that should be in the car) and this is what I have to deal with (see pics). Yes they are welded on and up side down! I was able to remove them with a screw drive, my bare hands, and VERY little effort. Nice right? Its a good thing I'm replacing the engine, otherwise the next time I jumped on it I may have needed a new hood.

Anyway, where is the CORRECT location for mounting the frame mounts? There are a bunch of holes in the cross member, but I don't know the correct ones to use with a 455. If anyone has a diagram or pictures that would be a huge help. I plan on welding the other hole so the cross member isn't like Swiss cheese as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

SBO and BBO mounts use the same mounting locations. they are just shaped differently from each other.
Here is where the mounts should go, on the drivers side at least, but I think that they will only bolt up properly in one spot on the frame.

I pulled my 350 today ago install a 455. I put on the 455 frame mounts, but I am curious why the passenger side is slotted (frame mounting holes) like the photo above while the drivers side is not. I bolted my new mount on the passenger side in the exact same spot and tightened it.....not sure I'll be having a problem later with it tightened it just sure looks like it will be hard to tighten later.

Not sure why you swapped the frame mounts as it was not necessary.

And so long as the new mounts are in the same spot as the old ones you should be fine.

Go back and read his original post. The previous mounts were poorly welded to the crossmember, and upside down!

dfire's mounts were welded, but joades came in later with the statement that he swapped the mounts, and asked about the slotted holes on the passenger side. I don't know why there are slotted as the lower mounting is fixed.

Yes - I came in late on this. I did swap my 350 mounts out and followed the part number advice from Joe. I want the 455 to be in the right spot plus my 350 motor mounts were shot anyway. I found the 455 frame mounts on Ebay at a pretty good price. I put the passenger side on in the same spot as the old one and cranked it down. I guess worst case I'll have to loosen them a touch and tweak it.

I mounted the frame pads roughly in the spot where they should be, but I still had to loosen them up to get the motor mounts to line up with them. My recommendation is to leave them loose till you get them lined up and have the bolt through the mounts and pads.

The frame pads that where on the car where different from the 455 pads I purchased. The 455's looked more reinforced. Keep in mind though that the 350 mounts where upside down and welded to the frame
