Looking for 70' - 72' Cutlass

Took our 72' 4 door Cutlass to a restorer a week ago & got the news I figured it would be. Mechanically she is great, but the body is going to need alot more work than we have money. Basically the whole rear clip needs to be replaced. So we are starting to look for a like Olds in the 70' - 72' year range. Another 4 door is the preference because a 2 door in good condition will probably be out of our budget. Running is also a preference so we could drive it back to Alberta, Canada. Sandable surface rust ok, no holes in the body. Won't be able to do anything this side of next spring but wanted to see if there is anything out there.

Going to change the "looking for" a bit on this one. We would be happy to find any rolling chassis (2 or 4 door) in the 68 - 72 range relatively rust free or at least easy enough to fix without having to do any welding. As long as the chassis will take the engine & drivetrain from our 72' 4 door. Doesn't need to have A/C either & would actually prefer not to have it. Again aming for spring time.

There is a member on here advertising a nice rear 4 door clip. I don't remember the user name but do a search under parts for sale. It sounds perfect for what you're wanting to do. Good luck!

A thought

Having seen your car @ the show in Cremona late this summer I am pleased to see that you chose not to pursue a restoration on that car.

Cars seem to have a way of finding me & I would be happy to send one your way. Not everyone is willing to love a more-door.

Within the 68-72 4 door spectrum are you open to both hard tops & sedans & what about a Vista Cruiser?

Also it would help if you can post a price range within which you are shopping.

Regards

Dave (the one who sold you the five SS 111 rims for your car)

Thanks Dave. We want to stay with the same body style (2 or 4 door) , not really interested in the vista cruisers. Hard top, no convertables. We've seen a couple ads for like 4 doors averaging around $2500 in pretty decent shape. Would have loved to find one like OLDS442REDBERET found. Something like that would be great.

I believe thats the one OLDS442REDBERET has right now. The body guy I talked to said we could get a rear clip but by the time it was done being replaced, painted, etc. it would be at least $20k which is out of our budget range.

So thats what the quarters are supposed to look like. Wonder what the reserve on it was? Auction eneded with it not met. Except for the roof, A/C, & no post its exactly our car back when it was new.

No. You missed the most important feature. That car is a 4 door HARDTOP your car is a 4 door sedan. The hardtop is far more attractive.

Yes absolutely right. It would be a nicer car to look at & a bit easier to get in and out of. We're not big on vinyl roof coverings but that one sure looked nice.

I had a very nice complete four door with a really nice frame two days ago. Yesterday we cut the rear panel off of it. And I was only asking $350.00 for it. Darn, I am Sorry

That would have been nice to see. No worries. We'll find something. I really hate to give up on the one we have.

4 Door Cutlass

There will be others. I saw the one on e-Bay and there was another one very, very similar to it that I don't think sold and it's been up for a re-list a few times. I'll bet it will pop back up again.

Good luck and I'm glad to see some interest in a 4 door.

Looks like another 4 door popped up on e-bay, a green 71 in NY. Looks decent but will probably need a bit of work around the wheel wells. Really nice interior though. Factory hoodlock!

I just watched the You Tube video the seller has for this car. Tell you what, this car's not bad at all!

Is that for the 1971 Oldsmobile 98 LS? (unless I'm looking at the wrong listing). That is a nice one, but not the body style we're looking for. We want to keep to the same body style as the Cutlass/F85. That 98 would would be a great cruiser though.

No, it's a green 1971 Cutlass Cutlass Supreme 4 door, the interior looks excellent, it's in NY & was just relisted, wants $7995 but has a Make Offer button. The seller has a YouTube video, very cool car!

A NY car will likely be plagued with rust, especially the frame. Work around the wheel wells spells the same problem John is gaced with now.

JohN, about the only advantage of buying a U.S. Car is most have AC. Look for something around Colorado and West

Agreed 100% on that. But man, it's tough finding interior in that condition, especially that woven fabric that was used. You look at that stuff wrong and it rips! But, a rusty frame is a no go, too much overhead. And it does need some work around those wheel well edges. If this car was slightly closer I'd be really tempted to snoop & go take a look at it for the heck of it. I like these 4 doors and they are hard to find in any sort of decent condition

x2 Allan. Closer this way would be a bonus, this side of the border would be even better to save on cost if nothing else. We're not really interested in an A/C car either, just something else to clutter up the engine compartment.

Well I'll tell ya what John, If you do end up buying an AC car you and I could work something out and I'd take the AC components off your hands and swap out the straight heater components from my car? You've seen my car and know it's in pretty good condition. No rush, I'm curious to see what you come up with. I'll also do a bit of checking around. Would you prefer a CS HT sedan? I think they're a much nicer looking car than the Town Sedan. So the hunt for a 70-72 CS HT sedan is on....yowsa! Send me a PM if you want to disclose how much your budget is?

Just a note - you must also know that the frame for a 4 door is different than a 2 door, and that driveshaft and e brake cables are also different? Good thing is that if you did find a nice roller, you already have the driveline on your Town Sedan rebuilt and ready to transplant if needed.

Ok Allan you got at deal on the A/C stuff (if we happen to end up with something like that). Will send a PM later. Yes a CS HT would be nice. As Oldsmobiledave said they look nicer than the sedans.

It's a long way from where you live, but there is a clean looking light blue 1971 Cutlass 4 door sedan just posted for sale on the Kalamazoo, Michigan Craig's List.

Overpriced @ 9K US but perhaps worthy of a phone call to see if he is negotiable on the asking price.
