Decided to start looking for my first muscle car since I was 16. Really wanting to build a 442 appearing car since any real ones are very likely out of budget.
Have a small budget to buy the car with and was gauging interest in this thread on what I can expect to buy with that. Total budget to buy the car right now is $4,500. I live in SW MO so the more distance the more reduced that is going to be. Have a cummins and an 18' trailer so hauling one is not an issue.

great looking 69-72 car i would suggest is a cutlass. sure it has a 350 in it but you can find a decent running one for around the money you are looking to spend. then if you want to after dumping some restore moneys into it i would then drop the 400 or 455 CI into her. That would be me though.

I think the '68 lack of the tooth is one reason people "forget" them when looking for a car.
I was orginally looking for 69-72, then I found my '68 for sale 2 miles from home. That was 13 years ago.

You shouldnt have a problem finding what u are looking for there are even some 442 that are under 4500$ just check craigslist/ebay. u can even find a cutlass that already has a 455 in it. i think colorado craigslist has 2 442s for under 4500$ i know one looks like it is in pretty good shape.

Not sure what I'm looking for exactly to be honest. I think I'll know it when it pops up.
As far as the 68 I have passed on some decent deals on them already, I just don't like the grill. The split headlights seem out of place.

It was agreat place to hide the ram air scoops for the W-30 package.

It wasn't the last time either....

The 80's Firenza had them too.

Well I found a few candidates. One from a member on here, and a couple on local CL boards.
Have some questions for the experts. I'm a big fan of what I believe is referred to as an OAI(?) hood. Not sure if I would clone a cutlass into a 442, but the hood is kinda a must. What's the best source and are they year specific?
Also where besides the trunk and floor pans should I be checking for rust on these?

alot of people will tell u to look for a real ram air hood. but i couldn't afford one of those thortons has a ram air hood they are also expensive and has a waiting list. there is tamraz hood which is the same as glasstek this is the hood i got good priced and good strength (710$ to ur door from there ebay store). there is us body source good also good but u have to cut ur own holes.
ram air hood is 69-70 and 71-72.
floor pans and trunk pans are easy to change if rusted. look at the quarters, check the bottom corners of the front window above the dash. and check up by the trunk hinge underneath the rear window.

Both cars are 70's. If I go this route it will be an aftermarket hood I just looked and real ones are 2K on ebay.
One that has my interest right now is running driving 350/350 car that comes with a 455/400.

I have a 70 Olds cutlass sx, original paint, buckets, console, 99,000 original miles, runs and drives great, a little rusty but frame and floors good. Asking $5995.00. If interested, give me a call 513-557-6633 (Cincinnati area) might take partial trade? Thanks, Scott
i agree the cutlass is easy to find cheaply I saw a 70% restored driving 72 cutlass in st louis 2 years ago for 5200. and I bought my 71 cutlass supreme hardtop in good driving condition for $5000. just gotta look and ebay is usually not the best in my experience searching craigslist works well if you look on the weekends I have noticed thats when the old cars get posted. but I see plenty of people on here are willing to sell theres to you as well keep hunting
1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Holiday Coupe (2dr Hardtop), 80k orig miles, came stock with an Olds rocket 350. I just had the engine and trans rebuilt and refreshed. see specs below.
According to Year One, there were only 569 Olds Cutlass S Holiday Coupes made in '69.

Dash is excellent, only one small crack that can barely be seen, front seat needs recovered, headrests need recovered, back seat decent. Needs headliner, and carpet. Door panels are good, drivers arm rest needs recovered.
I keep going back and fourth on whether I really want to keep it or lose it. I guess one could say I have my good days and my bad.
Problem is this is not my only project. Like my kids (4), there are other projects that need my attention. Therefore I don't need to keep dumping money into this one. I need to finish the ones I started WAY before even getting this car in the first place. Concentrate on one project at a time, then move on to the next.
Car is in Colorado Springs, CO if anyone needs shipping info.

Here's a link to my 1969 Cutlass (442 Clone). It's a 4-speed car and could be a great initial entry car for you.
