Smile Wanted: 1968-1972 Cutlass / 442

Please disregard this thread....a car was found and purchased. Thanks

Looking for a decent Cutlass to replace my '72 Supreme that I had to sell a few years ago. I want a '68-'72 Cutlass or Cutlass Supreme (or 442 of course) and would like to spend around $10k-$12k (less is better obviously but maybe more for the right car). I'm pretty much open to anything from '68-'72 but must be a 2-door.

I strongly prefer something that doesn't need bodywork, but might consider a project for the right car / right price. I don't do bodywork or paint so I'd have to pay top dollar for all of that work which makes a lot of projects cost prohibitive. I can do most mechanical work though so some projects would be considered.

I live in Northeast Ohio, not too far from Cleveland. I'm willing to pick up just about anywhere in the U.S. for the right deal. Please send me a PM or post the info here if you know of any nice Cutlasses for sale.

Thanks for your help!
Mike

For 10K you shouldn't have any trouble picking up a nice car. Good luck with your search. I'm guessing you are more interested in dealing with the actual owners. Do you still want an pm if we see one on a websearch?

Maybe we could post the links in this thread....what do you think? I search the internet pretty intensely just about every day, but there are certainly cars that I'd miss, I'm sure. I hit the usual places most days...CL, eBay, Auto Trader Classics, ClassicCars.com, etc...
But yea, either a post or a PM would be fine. Thanks

This looks like a pretty good deal to me - it's about 15 min. from O'Hare, and our 1/4" of snow melted immediatly!
I don't know how to display these C/L adds - someone else may help!

I've got a 69 442 w/ a new 455, It's in primer, needs paint and interior. EVERYTHING else on the car has been redone. rechromed bumpers and other chrome. I'd let it go for 10K CIFNFA

I've had this one bookmarked for several months since it appears to be such a nice, mostly original car. It looks just like my first '72 Supreme. It's about 90 minutes south of Pittsburgh, so it's not far from you.

I called on this one last night! I saw it over the summer and asked for more pictures then. I asked again last night.....STILL waiting for pictures.....want to see more before making the 7 hour drive. If it's as nice as it sounds I'll be going to pick it up! Thanks for the tip.

I love this one. This is another one that I called on....talked to the guy and explained that I need more pictures before driving that far. He said he'd email pictures. That was during the summer....still don't have pictures. I would say less than half the people I contact ever get back to me at all or follow up with pictures. I guess they don't want to sell these things!
Thanks

I've sent about 8 emails asking for pictures of the engine and trunk plus called and spoke to them twice....still no pictures! I just don't get it..I don't want to drive nearly 8 hours just to find out it's a piece of junk....guess they don't really want to sell it....wish they'd stop posting it.

You should def keep your eyes open. A private seller listing a car in a snowy region in the dead of winter won't have people lining up at his door. It could give you more leverage on pricing.

http://www.autotempest.com/

Search multiple CList at the same time.

Well, YLSNED!!
Ok I just made that up ( You Learn Something New Every Day).

Jamesbo, I was worried there for a second that you were ditching your HO. then I looked below your sig line. 69, 69, 69, 69.... I'm detecting a pattern. FWIW I really like the styling of the 69 almost as much as the 72.

Thanks very much but I think I'm probably going to stay away from the convertibles unless it's just too good of a deal to pass up.

I hope to look at a '69 Cutlass tomorrow. Is there anything specific on the '69 that I should look for? For example, did they all come with the TH350 or was there still a 2 speed option in '69? Any particularly bad spots for rust that might be hidden? Trouble spots on frame? Any good / bad options or equipment combinations, etc....
Thanks

Nice Supreme, not sure if its still available but worth a shot, great condition, well in your price range

Those are both nice and are priced pretty reasonably compared to a lot of them I've seen. Got them bookmarked. Thanks for the info.

OK, I'll bite.

How about a Rallye 350 Post automatic with a bench seat.
Fairly clean car with minimal rust. Clean trunk, original engine/drivetrain.
Complete, original except carb. May have original paint from doors back. The front fender have been replaced with dimple fenders. Bumpers are straight and original.

This is a nice car to start with if you like Rallyes!

Thanks for all the info....I updated my original post to include that I'd prefer something that doesn't need bodywork. I thought I had included that but apparently forgot to. I just don't know of a good place for reasonable bodywork / paint so most projects would end up costing too much in the end. I've been told $6k and up for paint by several local shops and some say they don't do rust repair!

I'm still interested in seeing all offers though if you don't mind sending them...can't hurt to look.

Thanks again everybody.

Looking for the right car is like beating your head against the wall. 2 of the last 3 cars I've gone to look at were inoperable at the showing....would have been nice to know that before I drove that far to see it (and hopefully test drive it or at least hear it run).

Another car...drove 3.5 hours to Buffalo...wouldn't let me drive it...got to go up and down in the driveway only! Are you kidding me?

Cars that are really far away (6 hours or more)...I can't get pictures from these people. Just this morning I received this reply to my email asking for more pictures, "not sure how many other pictures I have". But in the ad he says, "I have many pictures. Please email if interested."? What??

Another guy....I called as asked for more pictures....he says with a terrible attitude , "look, I'm on the other line...are you really interested? If you are, call me back some other time". Huh?? Sorry to bother you dude but YOU advertised the car....sorry for thinking you wanted to sell it.....

It seems that most of these people aren't interested in selling these cars at all and I'm about to throw in the towel.....very frustrating search so far. So many sellers state, "serious inquiries only"....I woud like to deal with "serious sellers only"! There should be a name for the selling version of a "tire kicker".... troller maybe? Fisher?

Is it just me??

EDIT: About people not sending pictures...I fully understand that many people don't have a way of sending pics...no digital camera or scanner, not good with the computer etc....not a problem. I am specifically speaking of those that tell me on the phone "I'll send them right over" and those that list in their ads "lots of pictures, email for more" but don't have any more?? Very confusing to me....

Take a fridge magnet with you and a telescopic mirror. Check the lower front fenders and rear quarters for rust and or Bondo repair. Alot of these babies got crossed up and ran into a tree or power pole. Look inside the trunk on the sides that attaches to the lower quarters. It's rust haven.

I thought I had finally found THE car....but....it appears to be yet another scam. This one seems to have a fake web site set up and everything. Will not answer email, will not answer phone, will not return phone calls. Can't find the business listed on the BBB site either....seems pretty fishy to me. Anybody live near Harrisonburg Virginia??

The difference is, I can do the mechanical work myself....I have to pay somebody thousands to do the body work and paint. What you've done looks great though. If I could get a nice paint job for a few thousand I'd be OK, but I'd probably be looking closer to $7,000 or $8,000 for paint. That puts me out of my price range for a complete car.

I've been asking around for a decent painter that does it on the side....should be more affordable. I'll keep you in mind if I find a good painter that doesn't want an arm and both legs.

I can't take on a project that big right now, but thanks for mentioning it. I'll keep you in mind if my plans change.......Mike

I was going over the pictures you sent me again and wow, that car really is nice. I think it's a new paint job away from being a $25k frame-off resto. I'm sure anything I find in my price range with a quality paint job will not be as nice mechanically. Bodywork and paint is my kryptonite though. If you still have it in the spring I think it's worth a test drive....and I'm still looking for a good place to get it painted. Sure love the looks of that 455 under the hood!
