Looking for '71-76 Custom Cruiser Wagon

Prefer a good condition '71 or '72 custom cruiser, but interested in hearing about any clamshell olds wagons for sale. Thanks for any leads.

I have a '73 with 125,000. Whole, good running car.
Needs rust repair to rear, $1500.00 in central WI.

I know a guy with a real nice, original 77. 350 Olds powered. For sale too, will be at the Homecoming show.

Thanks for the word, Stetzie. A little too far from here on the West coast, I'm afraid.

There is a 1975 light blue one on Philadelphia CL for $1000, needs a tranny.

If I wasn't buying a house, I would have it

Found this on local craigslist. It is not to far from me if you want me to look at it.

They haven't used a 6 digit plate in PA since 1991 and they reissued new plates starting in 2000 and did away with all the old plates. In other words, that car hasn't been on the road in at least the past 12 years, plus that's not a 72

I think it is. At least, that's definitely a '72 front end. '72 was the only year of the '71 to '76 era with the front turn signal lights above the bumper below the headlights.

The rear is correct at least for '72 and '73 as the '71s had louvers on the tailgate, and I believe '73 was the last year for the tall, vertical taillights. I think '74 was the first of the three-year run with the wider, "cathedral" tailights (below).

Here's a nice-looking '75 in Canada. Price is a bit steep:

Here's an ad for a '73 in Indiana with the two worst photos I've ever seen in an ad for a car:

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/cto/3057997900.html

Here's one in Las Vegas with kind of a strange ad and no photos. But it's closer to you.

Here's a '73 in Michigan that IS mislabeled as he calls it a '72. Looks a bit rough but quite restorable.

Here's another '72 in Las Vegas that looks quite nice. I don't think I've ever seen a white one of these wagons. Price is very reasonable.

Let us know if you do end up getting a wagon.

Jaunty,

You da man. Thanks for the leads. Of the ones you posted, the Las Vegas one is the most realistic distance-wise, but you're right, it's a strange ad. I called and couldn't get even basic information. Kinda sketchy.

I'll post the word here when my wagon eventually arrives.

There are two in Las Vegas. Which one are you referring to? I thought the white one for $2,400 looked to be the better of the two.

I think the 2 in Vegas are the same car. Both were owned for 19 years and the ads are similar.

Good point, except that in one ad he's asking $2400 and gives no phone number, and in the other it's $2800 with a phone number. But two of these for sale in the same city at the same time would be a bit of a coincidence.

I agree with Jaunty. He would definitely know about the 73 = he has one. So did I. The 72 pictured in the ad has all the hallmarks of 72 and looks period correct. I wouldn't base my decision on a license plate; the car could have been in storage for some time and may not be currently registered. The 74 model year did change the rear lights to what is shown on the blue wagon.

Here are other pictures of 72 Custom Cruisers for comparison:

(Okay, see, now you're just taunting me with those pics of the awesome '72 clamshells. But I can take it.)

The two ads in Vegas are the same car. The price has dropped from $2800 to $2200. But it's a two-seater, unfortunately.

So you're looking specifically for one with the 'rare 3rd row seat'? There were several last year on CL. Just have to keep a lookout for them. Sort of like Rob Young. He's been on the prowl for a 68-72 VC in turnkey condition. Only stipulations? Can't be green, no 455, and has to be reasonable $$$. You're not THAT fussy are you?

Gosh, I hope I'm not too fussy--with the possible exception of the third seat (which I understood was more common than the two-seater). And rust issues which, I understand from friends east of the Rockies, is a battle I'll never win.

And you're right. Patience is the watchword.

Older wagons do have some real appeal. That one in just black loses some of it though. Funny - why do people put the nose rocket on upside down so often?

All said, if it's in great shape and not just a bondo'd over cosmetics, that's a decent buy.
