1979 Hurst Olds

Looking for a solid driver quality 79 H/O. Condition of the paint isn't really that important, just not a lot of rust. Would like a black one.

You will have to look south...they were not sold in Canada. To my knowledge there are only 2 in Canada....one is in Calgary (I used to own it...a white one) & another in Barrie Ontario (it is black).

There are three real nice ones for sale in Pacific NW. Two are in Portland for $6500 (cloth interior) & the other is $5995 (vinyl interior). Both are white with camel.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/3326349894.html vinyl interior

http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/3338679178.html clothi interior

There is a third one in Seattle for $8995. White with camel cloth interior

If it was me I would be on that Portland one with the very rare tan vinyl interior. That car looks like it is in amazing shape. It has been for sale for a few months. $5K on the hood & you will be driving home.

Good luck with your search

What's going on with the front fender marker lights on the car from Portland for $6500?

Those front marker lights include the rare optional cornering light package. And I guess you saw this one has a white vinyl interior, which in my opinon looks horrible. The Seattle car is questionable given the incorrect header panel/grilles which belong to a Cutlass Supreme. It also has incorrect wheels. All 79 HO's were based on a Calais package which used a specifc header panel and grilles as well as painted tail light bezels among other things. Make sure you always ask for the VIN numbers. All 79 HO's will start with 3K47R9M______. The R designates the 350 motor. If the VIN begins differently, it's not a real HO. Also keep in mind that the tan lockland velour material is no longer available...anywhere, so if you find a car with that type of fabric interior that is ripped or worn, you will not be able to repair or match it. But find a nice velour interior and you'll find it to be quite comfortable.

There's one on there for $5995. I would like to find one closer to me if i could. From all the other ones i have seen on the net, that one might also be a bit over priced.

Was this supposed to be the vinyl interior, or velour interior that's not available?

Shane, are you absolutely bent on a 79? There's a guy in Southern Alberta has an 80 442 W30 he's selling as a resto - comes with a Calais parts car for spare parts. Do you want his ph #? He was asking 2500 for the package. Don't know if he's sold them yet.

Allan, i would rather have a 79. I had a 79 when i was in highschool, and absolutely loved that car. Plus there are a couple of 80 442's that are closer to me than Alberta if i decided to go that route. Thnx tho! Here is my 79 i used to have.

I had a 78 Calais, and I know what you mean about loving the car. Had mine for a little over 3 years before I traded it on an Omega Brougham. Big mistake....

re: the 80 442 W30? Not a problem. I was just passing along some info I got through our local clubs classified ads.

The tan velour fabric is no longer available and that includes the companies who specialize in NOS upholstery. It's just no longer at there unless you find someone who bought some years ago and is holding onto it. Years ago, SMS had that fabric in red and blue I believe. I'm not sure about the vinyl. If you are looking for a car that is 100% correct with the tan velour interior, better find one that has a nice interior to start with. Black 79 HO's did have the tan velour, black vinyl and maybe tan vinyl.

I used to own a white 79 HO with tan velour interior and gold anodized Hurst T-tops. Hurst made 4 sets of gold anodized t-tops for the 79 HO's and 2 were installed in black cars and 2 were to go in white ones. The white one I had was the only white one to get the gold tops as the other was supposed to be for Linda Vaughn's car and she declined them. The HO I had belonged to Hurst and was the promo car used by Hurst. When I bought the car from them, they gave me the extra set of gold t-tops. The where abouts of the 2 black cars with the gold tops in unknown.

That's a gorgeous car. Love the polycast wheels and t tops. Did you guys take that pic at Brian's place? Looks a lot like his driveway and neighborhood in the background. I know the dude and he's hysterically funny at times - plus a real car guy. What I think is uber cool is having all 3 owners in the car photo as a provenance item. Ha ha, funny comment about moving so we'd see the HO license plate. Never would have figured it out any other way....

I'm surprised you don't have a pic of that blue/tan Calais in your avatar. I had a 78 Calais that was silver / burgundy top with red interior. First year of the body change. Really loved that car even though it had chebby power. It's a classy looking car.

79 ho

Shane;
I had the black 79 HO in Barrie & sold it to a guy in Collingwood for $10K a bout 3 years ago.
The car was near mint as I did a "groundup" resto on it. It had very low mileage, numbers matching & a near perfect tan velour interior. The only non original part is the 342 gears & posi that I swapped in for the factory 273 pegleg rear.
The current owner had it for sale on trader.ca about a month ago for $15K
which is a bit pricey??

I have seen & ridden in this car & can verify that the car was a steal at $10K. The last asking price of $15K was too steep but this car is worth pursuing.

That car has been on Kijiji for awhile now, never a good sign. $10,000. is top dollar for these cars so it had better be nice. You would think for that kind of money they would post up more pics!

79 ho

Shane;
That was my car!
Considering what I did on the car, I think it is well worth the $10K.
I sold it for $10.5K so the seller is not making $ on it.
He is an "old school" hotrod type & retired mechanic - nice guy.
The only thing it probably needs is a "refresh" on the numbers matching 350 engine.

Collingwood is only a short day trip for you & I would highly recommend u check it out if u really want an original 79 HO.

Regards
Derek(Dick)
