When I was a kid, the first mistake I made with my old Chevy was to attempt a valve adjustment on hydraulic lifters. The old 265 never idled smooth, thereafter. There used to be a can of stuff available, back then, which would dissolve the varnish built up in those lifters. I forget what they called it. He could try replacing the oil with oil of diesel spec. Then, take the car out on the freeway. The high concentration of detergent, found in diesel spec oil, should rid the engine of deposits

I didn't read the ad real close, I just posted the link for him. I'm gonna go check out the car myself on Fri. Who knows, I might end up with it if the planets line up right.
