1972 Hurst Olds Convertible for sale I have a 1972 Hurst Olds convertable for sale. It runs great and is currently being stored in Lake Ozark Missouri. We have lots of the original paperwork. We are asking $30,000 neg... for the car. We are getting ready to bring the car back to Kansas City this fall to make it easier buyers to see. We don't spend any time at the lake in the winter.
My father purchased this car over 30 years ago but has since passed on.
We do not drive the car very often and have decided not to restore it.

We would like to sell it before the end of the year.

I really hate to be so darn jaded...but doesn't this sound like a scam. If I am wrong I truly apologize.

 

Finally figured out how to post some pictures.
The car has had the decals removed and was resprayed over 7 years ago.
My father became ill during the process and the car never was finished on the outside. He also painted the wheels white, don't ask me why. The spare is still gold. The engine transmission and rear end were rebuilt 6 years ago. The only thing on the car that is not original is the intake manifold. When the carb was rebuilt the shop said a new manifold (new technology) would perform better. We kept the old one thought.
The interior seat and carpets are all original.
We are asking $30.000 put have some wiggle room.

Is this a dealer conversion? I thought the cowl tag had to have W45 on it

 

Yeah, agreed, it's gotta have W45 in the trim tag, else it's just not a "real" hurst olds.



The Fisher plant put that W45 or W46 code onto the tags for the cars that were ordered for HO production, usually something around March/April of 1972.

 

 

Interesting. I have had two people who restore these confirm the vin and cowl numbers as being a Hurst Olds.
We have the original bill of sale and the dealer paperwork as well. We are the second owners. I attached a shot of the car taken about 25 years ago.
I guess I will confirm soon enough. I have had 15 responses form this site.
Will be meeting with someone this weekend to go over the car. Interesting article below regarding cowl tags.

There's enough guys on here with hurst Olds, maybe they can chime in on their cowl tags.

Also it seems that the hurst olds in that Article was from 69, not sure if anything changed or not for 72.

 

The VIN cannot confirm that it is a Hurst.

 

All H/O's have the rally-pack gauges too. This car does not have that option. Nice car, but like allyolds68 said, a dealer conversion.

 

From the literature on Wild About Cars/Auto History Preservation Society websites, it seems the Rally Pac gauges were not a required option on the '72 Hurst/Olds.

 

The following link tells how to authenticate - if it were a hurst it would have W30 or W45 in the VIN.

This is not accurate, you cannot tell by the vin for any year H/O that it is one, the information is not there.

Please forgive my ignorance on this one, but why did they make so many of them?

Was it to make instant collectables, or were the cars used at other race tracks around the country, besides Indy?

OK - so they were intended as collectables from the get-go, and not needed as actual pace cars.

That May 1972 Hot Rod Magazine is easily available on ebay for around 10 bucks.

So it sounds like the evidence is pointing to this (good looking) car most likely being one of those...

Actually that is not true. The 1968's can be identified by the vin and where they were delivered too.The 1969's also but about 300 of them have lost vins due to a fire at Demmer engineering. So you would need some hard proof as to originality...

 

Then let me re-phrase my answer. You cannot tell a H/O by it's vin unless you tie it to the H/O registry. If you were to find an Olds repainted in it's past, and the typical H/O identifiers were missing due to time and previous owners, a look at the VIN would not clue you to the fact that it is a H/O, only that it has a 442 VIN (34477, 34487), then, only by cross referencing the VIN to the H/O registry would you know that it was an H/O.
