1968 Cutlass W-31

This is my 1968 Cutlass S W-31 2 door coupe. Has a Rocket 350, full roller motor, 4 speed with around 400 hp. Full suspension that was used to prototype a few suspensions currently in production. Handles like a sports car. Used on road course tracks including Road Atlanta and VIR. Full nut and bolt restoration finished in '09. Needs some interior work done, headliner installed (included) and it currently has some racing bucket seats.
Seen in Oct. 2008 issue of Popular Hot Rodding
Shes ready to go!
Dont really want to sell her but she has to go.
Asking $25,000 or make offer. Also willing to do partial trade on a 52-57 2 door or convert project.

Want more info or pics just ask!

Ram Rod

Looks like a fun ride.

What documentation do you have to verify that this is a Ram Rod?

I Have the original build sheet from the car, Originally delivered to Bush Oldsmobile in Lenoir, NC. It is missing its ram air induction and the red inner fenders though.
Originally a gold car.

Fyi a ram rod has black inner fender wells. Does your car have the special harmonic balancer for starts. Irregardless looks like a great fun car - good luck with sell - Dean

Ive talked to a few people about it. Been told that production numbers were around 30. When I bought it I didnt know that it was a w31. Someone saw it at a race and got real mad that I was racing such a rare car.

Time & time again we have heard that Lansing built cars did not have build sheets left in the cars on the assembly line. We know it has to be a Lansing car since it is presented as a Ram Rod.

So....if you have a build sheet please share. Can you scan what you have & post it?

Dave, I cant scan it, didnt manage to get it out in one piece, its in a frame. Was located between the gas tank and the body. I can post a pic of it though, Gotta find my camera.
Allyolds, Not sure where its been, but I bought it in primer in 2004 in Lincolnton, NC. Was advertised as a cutlass "s" in hemmings. Rooster Bush (Formally Bush Olds) dug through and found the sales info whrere they sold it in '69.

Forgot to mention the condition it was in when I bought it. It had the 350 with 403 heads and an intake. Jim at Classic Oldsmobile managed to find me some ram rod heads. The car also had a th350 in it, but still had most of the 4 speed parts. Got a m-21 rebuilt for a vette with a Zoom clutch and a 2.43 rear end. Never had the factory front seats so i put in some racing seats. Forth time on the track there was a guy talking trash about my car and he was in an audi R8. So we raced, I won and also bent 6 push rods and fried 2 main bearings. Talked to Dick Miller about what I was doing and he set me up with a new rear suspension, roller cam, roller lifters, and roller lockers, aluminium radiator, electric water pump, electric fan, and fuel pump, and DUI ignition with rev control, with manual switches to control it all. The crank has also been lightened and balanced. I have been clocked at 156 mph at the front straight of VIR.

Ram rods did not come w/ ac unless of course after market. In addition look for build date on cowl tag, all ram rods were built late January to April early May latest of 68. This was a very late idea due to the disappointment of the 400s.

Looking at the Build sheet it does have option L74, Hi comp 350, along with M20 4 speed, built in M, and option C60 air cond. BUT has option J50... Power brakes... So not a ram rod? It also has a vinyl top with a vinyl top delete, thought that was funny... The date section on the build sheet is blank though

310 horse power, just m-21s, Oldsmobile was only planning on making 50 or so for the track then NHRA mandated 500 units. Absolutely no a/c or power brakes. In 68/69 the only w car to have power brakes was a 69 w-32 due to milder cam which enabled enough vacuum for power brakes. However a 68 four speed cutlass is in my opinion is still a rare car considering most were automatics. Hope this helps and good luck w/ sale. Dean

Not to hijack the thread, but can you PM me about the DUI ignition. I'm thinking of getting it for two of my SBO 4-speeds.
Thanks, Dave.

Please post as legible a pic of it as you can. The firewall body tag will have a date code on it. PB and AC definitely knock it out as being an original W31.

Dave, I take except of the totality of "due to the disappointment of the 400s". Yes they were disappointing, but the development of the high performance small blocks were under way before the '68 400s hit the track. No just with Olds, either. The "Junior Supercar" was up and coming regardless of the performance of the 400s. But that "disappointment" certainly added fuel to the program.
Small point, regardless.

Well either way the car is still for sale. Either as a "w31" or a 4 speed Cutlass "s" with a w-31 motor. I really dont want to sell her, but certain things force a sale... Shoot me an offer

It is still for sale but it is not and never was a Ram Rod. That is a rather important point. Still a fun car. Good luck with the sale.
