1970 Y74 Cutlass Pace Car
I've got one of these I've been thinking about selling and was going to ask the "What is it worth?" question. I guess we can wait and see!

What do you guys think it will sell for?

I would say yes. It is 100% complete (including to hard to find parts). I'm the third owner and have the Protecto plate and documentation. I've owned it for over 20 years, but haven't driven it in 20 years. It has been stored in a dehumidified garage. It will need some body work, it does have some rust but not alot. Doors still close tight and easy with that reassuring solid click.
My wife has convinced me that I don't have enough years left to complete all my projects, so I'm considering sell projects and buying something nice/completed. I watch with great interest the W31 thread a few weeks back and in fact StickW31 had contacted me and was interested if the post car fell through, it didn't. There was a rought looking Rallye 350 that sold on ebay a few weeks ago, rougher than mine by alot, for $6000. The W31 somewhere around $7500 and it looks like the Pace car north of $10000. This does not include all the NOS parts I've collected in the last 20 years. That means I could sell all mine and have over $20000 to put into one I could drive today, intriguing to say the least.

In 2002 before the muscle car market went crazy (well MOPARS were crazy then but nothing else was) I looked at a 70 Cutlass Pace Car in Needham MA just down the street from Berejik. (I think Berejik was closed by then but the showroom was still there) A woman about my age (I'm 48) had owned it for many years. I think she got it when she graduated from high school or college. She'd replaced all the body panels with rust free Southwestern parts and the body was mostly in primer. The body work was very good and it needed about $4000 worth of bodywork & paint to get it to show quality. The car was complete except someone had stolen the OAI air cleaner and obviously it needed a decal kit again.
She was asking $7,500 which was pretty reasonable, even back then. This car looks to be in comparable shape although I really think it hurt the price not having any decent pics of the exterior. The Cutlass Pace Cars don't seem to pull anywhere near the money the 442 Pace Cars do.

I think Cutlass Pace cars are like the rallye 350s, people either love them or not. I think they should be worth more than they are but I too always seem to notice a premium on the 442 pace car vs the Cutlass. 15-20 years ago I was looking at a bunch of pace cars, the nice Cutlass cars were around 10k the 442s 16+ a 50% plus premium.

i always thought those cars should have had w/30 w/31 motors in them then they would have been more desirable to me, but I guess those motors wouldnt be Indy track friendly? i think i would take a 4 spd ralley over one of those

I was told in 1991 by the guy that tried to get the seller down $300 and walked away that it was worth $8-9000. I paid the $300 he wouldn't and told him he didn't deserve the car. I guess they haven't gone up at all in 20 years. Back in 1992 or there abouts I saw a beautiful 70 Cutlass Pace car at Carlisle with 50k miles and plastic floor covering the original perfect carpet and he wanted $20000.

I saw the ad on ebay. The photos were terrible. Nor did you get a good sense of the rest of the car. The seller did not help himself. On the issue of buying a project versus buying a car that is already done, my thoughts are: You know what is done to the car and you can do a car to your satisfaction. And do it your way. Plus the cost is spread out over time. Buying a restored car to me is as risky as buying a project in that you do not know what may need to be done. The Cutlass pace car on ebay is a good example. Something was done incorrectly with the paint work. And if a corner was cut there, chances are other corners were also cut. The saying you get what you pay for is not always true with someone else's restoration. If you are thinking of buying a restored car, go through all the photos and invoices for the work done. Just my thoughts and opinions

Anyone know why the bench was standard in a car that went to such lengths to look sexy from the outside?
#15
Never the less, seat options were part of the model and not related to W45 option. On the F85, buckets were not an option. On the Cutlass S, bench was standard, and buckets were optional.

I agree that this was a bad set of pictures and they certainly do not do that car any justice. It seems reasonable that you could pay someone $50 or so to take a decent set of pics. Or even spend a couple hundred to get the car put outside in the daylight, clean the junk out of it, wash it, and take a good set of detailed pictures. The owner would easily get this money back in more interest, potential buyers and an eventual sale.
To be clear about the Pace cars...the Y74 was almost entirely an appearance package. And the package is EXACTLY the same whether on a Cutlass or a 442. They were all White convertibles with White top and Black interior. They all had decal stripes, Black rocker paint, SSII, sport mirrors and W25 - that's it. Other than that they could have been optioned (almost) like any other Cutlass or 442 convertible. Some had buckets, some bench; some automatics, some 4-speeds, etc. Also, if you were to order one you had the choice of putting the lettering on the door or not.
It's true that their value is down at the moment but so is just about every other collector car. This particular example seems to have been bid to a reasonable price given the amount of work it still needs.
I’ve had my Cutlass Pace car for over 20 years and I still love it. I’ve driven it cross country several times and it’s a lot of fun to drive, as is any Cutlass convertible. I think the paint scheme makes it special and unique and don’t forget that even without documentation these cars are coded on the firewall data plate. There were very few produced with this option – 358 Cutlass and 268 442, and that’s rare by anybody’s standards.
The 1970 Pace Cars are beautiful, rare and very desirable in my opinion. And I can guarantee you won’t get mine for $20k!!

The guy selling this isn't doing himself any favors with his picture taking. At least he has some (washed out) outside pics now.

Yes at least 2 4spd cutlass pace cars were mane and shipped to canada. In the last couple of years one has returned to the states. I have had leads on two 442 4spds but no one has come to the plate with true documentation. A 4spd could have been ordered as there was no restriction. All the track cars were auto. So any pace cars built after may could have been ordered with 4spd. Y74 was actually a stripe option with the w-25 included. You could not have a factory w-30 or w-31 as the two w25 hood would cancel each other out.
#22
The Cutlass version had stock 350 4bbl, the 442 version had stock 455 4bbl. I don't think any other engine options were available on the Pace Cars.
#23
correct the base engine for the cars were all that were offered. You could not get a factory w-31 or w-30 as the y-74 option would have canceled them out. Both the w cars and the y-74 cars included the ram-air hood and one could not get two hood for the same car.
