I think he means "rare", not rear. Car's not that rare, anyway, relatively speaking. There were 12,192 2-door Delta 88 Customs made that year (along with 14,306 4-doors).

What's with the dual-snorkel air cleaner? That's certainly not original.

I like how it's a no reserve auction. He started the bidding at $2,000, which is apparently what he wanted out of it, and he has a bid. The car will sell, apparently.

The Old Cars Price Guide, October 2011 issue (just arrived in my mailbox) puts the value of a '67 Delta 88 Custom 2-door in #4 condition at $3,360.

It looks like the car used to have a vinyl roof. You can see the stainless steel trim by the roof line. I can also see an aftermarket A/C unit and the steering wheel is not original. The wheels are interesting as well. They are not original. I wonder what they are from? '67 Oldsmobile 88's had a 5 x 5" bolt pattern.

How many 2 dr delta 88's did they make in 68? I have not been able to find this info. They seem to be more rare than the 67's and 69's. From what I have seen you could search for years and never find one, I think I did see one on Ebay this year though.

 

Looks like it sold for $3,250. Sounds like a good deal to me. That's what you would pay for a crappy 90's car in pretty decent shape.

 

There were two versions of 2-door Delta 88s over those years, the "regular" Delta 88 and the more upscale Delta 88 Custom, which was introduced in 1967 and lasted through 1971.

To sort of finish the thought, the Delta 88 "Royale" first appeared in 1969 and lasted for many years. The last "Delta" 88 Royale was in 1988. After that, Olds called the series simply "88," leaving off the word "Delta", and the 88 Royale continued through 1995.


Anyway, getting back to the three years in question, production of the two types of 2-door Delta 88s is shown.

For 1967:

Delta 88 2-door hardtop (Holiday Coupe): 14,471

For 1968, same three, in order:

So production of 2-door non-convertible Delta 88's or Delta 88 Customs was much higher for 1969 than for the previous two years. In total, it was more than double.

But 1968 saw more total production than 1967, so '68s are not more rare than '67s.

 

hmm, I wonder why they seem to be harder to find. I have never even seen one in person other than mine. So out of those numbers I wonder how many are left now...

 

I know of 2 1968 Delta Custom (parts) cars in the Edmonton area. I also have 2 Delta Customs in my yard - one is a bucket seat parts car and the other one is loaded with buckets and console. I have seen another one in the area that was a gorgeous turquoise with parchment interior. I haven't seen it for a few years.
BTW there never was a Delta 88 convertible produced.

There's no way to know for sure about any particular make/model/year. Government websites that are concerned with such things will talk about "vehicle scrappage rates" and things like that. There's lots of debate about this, but, very generally, according to government figures, the "average" car is junked at such a rate that, after about 25 years, about 1% of original production remains on the road. The number tends to level out at that point because some are always preserved by collectors or whatever.

Of course, some styles, like convertibles and coupes, tended to be better treated and kept in greater numbers than more utilitarian vehicles like 4-door sedans and station wagons. So even though the sedans and wagons were produced in greater numbers originally, you see more coupes and convertibles today.

So 1% of the roughly 28,000 2-door 1968 Delta 88's is 280. So I would guess that there would be somewhere around this number, maybe as many as a few hundred more. So there could be 100, there could be 500. I doubt there would be as many as 1,000, but that's just my guess.

Yes, this is true. But strangely, only for 1968. There were Delta 'verts both before and after.

Yeah, that sounds about right. That would make them pretty rare. Yeah I tried to get on right before work yesterday around 2:30pm and I couldn't.
