What do you think?

Hey guys, I was thinking of buying an A body Olds, but this one caught my eye. What do you think?

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...328577893.html

FYI - I'm transferring to Vancouver for work, and it looks like I can't take my 66 Dynamic with me, so I'm looking for a "new" Olds. I like mid 60's to early 70's Olds styling, and something in the musclecar category would be cool.

I also found a guy selling a 67 Cutlass 4-door. I like the look of the car but those extra doors make me want to look for other cars.

I'm torn.

Looks nice!

I had a couple of '68's I really liked years ago.

Exact car and color that my parents bought new in 1969. If you are lucky that one has the 390 hp 455 too. My brother and I used to race around in the car (didn't tell parents though).

That's a Royale. Look close at the rear window and you'll see it's styled different than regular 88 coupes.

Lots of Royales had the hot engine and many also were bucket/console cars.

If it were within a day's drive of me, for that money it would be in my driveway.

Every car I see that I would like is at least 2500 miles away. Saves me a lot of money though.

Looks like a nice car and a nice price as others have said. Too long to fit in my garage, though. My 69 H/O only fits in with 7 inches to spare! I'd look at it seriously if I had the space.

Yeah, this 69 Delta does look like a pretty nice car . And the price is good. I saw that the owner sent out a few ads for this car with the price going down each time. Guess he's having troubles selling the car as fast as he would like.

FYI the Cutlass I was talking about is here:
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rd...307943079.html

Also a nice car in my opinion. The engine bay is looking pretty good. I talked to the seller and he said the previous owner rebuilt the engine a few years ago. He said that he's selling because he has too many projects on the go (you can tell by seeing the cars in the background of his pics). Maybe this is more up my alley. I like the look of this car and I did want somehthing that needs a bit of work. Comparing it to a Delta I'm guessing the smaller size would be an advantage, as in less weight for the motor to pull around.

Any thoughts on A bodies vs. B bodies? Only olds I've driven is my 66 Dynamic, and it makes for a good cruiser.

Thanks for the replies.

The Cutlass looks good, too. Buy them both.

... and forgot to mention. Still waiting to hear from the owner of this Delta what kind of 455 is in there. From what I've learned there are 3 versions of the 455 engine rated at 310, 365, and 390hp.

Learning that this Delta has a 390hp engine would definately make it all the more tempting.

2-bbl= 310 hp, 4-bbl= 365 hp. I don't know of any good way to tell the presence of 390 hp L32/W33 in 1969. The engine code tape would be UL, but what's the odds of it still being there?

Looks GOOD~! I'd say consensus is 'go for it...' GOOD LUCK and keep us posted! (ESPECIALLY IF you "buy 'em BOTH" as has been advised! )

LOL,
Yeah, I spent some time looking around to see what else there is around Vancouver. For a while I was trying to find a 442. I like the look of the 68-72 models. But apparently on my limited budget all I could get (for a 442 like this) would be a rusted out shell of a car with no trans or engine. Not what I'm looking for really.

I was hoping for more info on the Delta, but haven't heard anything from the owner. I will give them a call today.

I still am leaning towards the cutlass. It looks like a solid car, and there are lots of stock and aftermarket parts available. Plus the fact that the engine has been rebuilt recently is a big plus.

Will keep you posted.

As a Oldsmobile hobbyist the Delta if it has a 390 hp engine wins. But if you want a fun street car the cutlass would be better as a modified fun car. If the Delta is not sold and you dont buy it you should post it in the for sale section of this site. Just put "not mine in the ad". A Royal with a 390 is almost the most collectible of the 88 series and that one needs to be in one of our collections.

Yeah, I still haven't ruled out the Delta.

I finally heard from the owner last night. He doesn't seem to know much about the car... he says that the stock carb was a 4bbl. It was taken off and an aftermarket 4bbl carb was installed. He said it has single exhaust, but he wasn't sure if it was stock. ...seems strange.

I haven't done much deciphering of cowl tags, but he said he can get me the numbers, or a pic I can use to figure out more about this car. Plus he will send more pics of the engine, interior, etc.

Likely the delta is a 365 hp version. You probably cannot easily get a number of Royals with 390 hp but they are not common. The fact that it is probably the more common version still makes it a pretty good deal for the price. If it was a 390 hp you would have got quite a deal on a cool car and been the envy of the delta collectors. 1969 and 1970 were very good years for the delta 88s.

wow........for $2700 you can't beat that Delta....no matter what the engine rating is. I would think that you'd have to find a build sheet in order to verify which engine was in it unless the block #'s are different for the 360/390 hp versions.

And I always loved a tilt/tele steering wheel........the only way to get it positioned exactly where you want it.

that car would be long gone if it were on the east coast.

So, I finally got some more info on the 69 Delta.
The owner gave me info from the cowl tag... although I have to figure out how to decipher it:

"as per my 69 88 cowl tag #s as they appear

Body by Fisher
ST69 36647LAN386900BDY
T8 364 65 F
O5B"

Anyone care to take a shot at what this means?

I know that the 05B means built in the second (B) week of May (5), that would be May of 1969. The other numbers/letters are trim codes, paint codes, etc. that someone with a reference for these will be able to tell you.

Ya keep dilly dally ing and it will be gone. A good car for the price. Single exhaust would be a 365 hp car....and guess what?, it'll still move out! As others have posted, duals to be a 390hp version, plus maybe if it still had the original sticker on the air cleaner (easy to switch though), it would say i believe "Police Apprehender". I have seen only one of these, and it was at Homecoming several years ago.

That car's still available?!?

Buy it already, or I'll take vacation time, fly out there, and buy it myself!

I'm moving from Winnipeg, half-way accross the continent. Yes I know I'm taking my time here, but I made a long distance, sight unseen purchase before and got burned. At the time I had a friend take a look and even take video, but you can't replace that with being there yourself.

I've dealt with sellers who are dishonest before, and I've seen cars that look great from the outside, but have serious problems.

If this car is sold before I make a move then I'd be fine with it. So far I haven't gotten as much info as I'd hoped from the owners of these cars. They both don't seem to be Olds guys. If I had more to go by I'd take the leap and buy one.

Thanks guys for your help and advice. Looks like I got lucky, my work decided to help me out with my car and they are paying 1/2 of the cost to ship it to Vancouver. I am glad, my car may not be super nice, but I like it. I know if I did sell it I would have never recovered all my time and money put into it.

The two cars I was interested are nice for sure, and as far as I know they are still up for sale.
