FS: 1979 Hurst Olds 38K Survivor
I’m selling my 1979 Hurst Olds with 38,373 original miles and the car is a true survivor. It is white/gold with a tan velour interior and the VIN is 3K47R9M543854. I am the third owner and I acquired the car back in May but have now decided, for various reasons, to take my automotive hobby in a different direction. The car was a Colorado car all its life up until this past May. The first owner was a woman and she sold the car to the person I bought it from in 1988 with roughly 33,000 miles on it. The second owner used the car very little taking it to a few local shows each year and thus he only put a little over 4K miles on it in the 26 years he owned it. It has been garaged its entire life and is a rock solid car with no rust. The car retains many of its factory parts including the factory radiator and heater hoses as well as the factory belts with the GM logos on them. These parts work fine but should be replaced if the car will be driven more frequently than the last owner did. The car also retains its original paint except for the LF fender and header panel as they sustained minor damage at some point and were repaired. The repair work on the fender is cracking in the area of the W30 decal. The front bumper and driver’s side headlight bezel also were replaced as part of the same damage repair. Outside of that the remainder of the exterior of the car appears to be completely original and it shows well. The gold paint on the hood and roof is starting to develop some checking but it still is very presentable as is. The car runs well but could stand a tune-up to make it a little better. I note the plug wires are aftermarket items. While in very nice condition the car is not perfect and it has some chips and scratches in the paint and some have been touched up while a few others have not been. There are a few minor bumps too but nothing that really stands out. Overall the car is very straight.
This HO is equipped with many options including a very rare power moonroof, ultra rare Tempmatic AC which some of the 79 Experts tell me they have never seen before, PW, PL, Power seat, cruise, Power trunk release, tilt column, am/fm cassette stereo with functional power antenna, rear defogger, 2:73 posi, waste basket, seat belt warning chime/light, headlight warning/chime, analog clock, bumper guards and maybe something else that I haven’t noted. The interior in the car is in very nice condition and the seats show little wear and upper rear seat back is still soft and pliable. The headliner fabric is just starting to drop a little and the instrument surround has a crack in the top right corner like most of them do. I installed a correct rebuilt carburetor that happens to have (by luck) a date code that is 14 days off of the original. I also installed a new alternator as the original had a noisy bearing. The original carb and alternator go with the car. There is also a new battery in the car. I also installed a correct new muffler and tailpipes. The tires were replaced in 2011 and still look brand new. I was told these new tires replaced the originals.
I have several NOS parts and a few used ones that also go with the car and I will not sell these parts separately. These parts, while not necessarily needed, came as a package deal after I acquired the car. The NOS parts include: both front fenders, grilles (gold paint not on them), fender rocket emblems, clock (already installed in the car), driver’s door upper hinge, header panel emblem base assembly, rear bumper impact strip, “Oldsmobile” logo that goes on header panel, front side marker light bezels and set of W30 fender decals. Used parts include barely used mint pair of headlight bezels, a perfect instrument surround, a Supreme header panel and the ring for the top of the distributor that helps retain the plug wires on the cap. There is also a complete set of NOS wheel lug nuts but I believe they are 100% correct for a firebird wheel but are almost a perfect match to the HO lug nuts.
I am asking $11,500 or BO and please ask any questions you may have.

I LOVE cars like this. Better than a restored car any day. When and if I sell the W-30 I will be looking for a low mile survivor car. I don't know the market for this model but I feel like you have a great price on it.

Thanks. They are only original once and this one has survived very well. Its also nice to have a car that hasn't been played around.
Thanks Eric. Activity has been a little slow but this isn't the ideal selling time either.
Thanks.

Brian, what's involved with fixing the headliner? That's the only thing that really stands out in the pics. I had that issue show up on my 1983 Regency Brougham and never really addressed it before I sold the car. It also had a factory sun roof like this 79 H.O.
IMO it's about the only thing a guy might quibble about on such a nice survivor as this, especially since there's such a nice inventory of NOS and OEM parts going with it. I think the fact that it has 2 of the rarest options offered for the H.O. (moon roof and tempmatic AC) + survivor status make this a very desirable car. I'm surprised you're only asking 11,500.00 Someone will be getting a heck of a good deal.

Thanks for the feedback Allan.
The backing board on the headliner is fine and it just needs to be recovered with new fabric. I debated on doing this work before I offered the car for sale. But I also saw there are those who like survivor cars to be as untouched as possible and some prefer to leave a less than perfect headliner in it because it is original. I decided to leave it as is and let the new owner decide for themselves how they wanted to deal with it, if at all.

Gene, I know your 79 HO has the T tops from Hurst. Not many of them around either IIRC. Does your car also have tempmatic AC? Most of these cars that had AC were the regular 4 season IIRC. Another nice feature.
Brian - I noticed that the bolts that hold the braces and hinges are painted blue, which is different from previous years. Somewhere in the back of my head I remember that was to remind the GM techs that these bolts were either 13 or 14 mm (metric) instead of SAE? I don't know if that was something that went on all the 79 cars or just the HO's. Something tells me it's all the cars because the fenders would be universal and so would the radiator supports?

I have owned 1 1979 HO & 6 1980 442s. All 7 cars had the mix of imperial & metric (blue) bolts.

Brian might. I think he used to work for or with Hurst at one time. Anyhoo, I'm sure someone will know. This one though is a scarce one with the moon roof. Not many of them were built from what I understand.

Per above, I don't think GM kept stats on which of the 537 white/gold and/or black/gold 79 H/O's had the factory T-Tops, as they didn't for the sunroof cars. But, I was told by a very credible source that only 20 to 25 1979 Hurst Olds cars had this sunroof. This makes Brian's 79 for sale one heck of a find to whomever buys it. My 79 Hurst does not have the Tempmatic and Brian's is the only Hurst I have ever seen that has it.
The Hurst/Hatch kits were aftermarket & could be bought for the Cutlass, Regal, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix. The ones on my 79 H/O though, are one of only 4 sets of the Gold annodized Hurst Hatches; I have 2 of these 4 sets. My Hurst is probably 1 of 1 with these installed. The non-anodized have that aluminum look to them.
Per those bolts, everyone above is right, the non-metric were unpainted and the metric were painted blue, I guess to avoid confusion on the assembly line (?) as to which tools to use. No rhyme or reason as to where & when they were slapped onto a car, much like use of aluminum hoods in some cars but not others, I guess.
By the way, one more thing on Brian's 79 H/O here. I don't think he would mind me when I say that regarding his 79 H/O: I have seen this car, I have sat in this car, I have smelled this car, I have operated the sunroof, I have heard it run, and the frame is fantastic. This is a fine example of a solid, solid original 1979 H/O. Why am I not buying it for myself? Sadly I have no more room for another car and Brian won't sell it equipped with a divorce attorney. I think you all know what I mean. HOWEVER, if someone out there wants to give me $30,000 for my 79 H/O send me a private message. I would then have room, and I could/would then buy Brian's car IMMEDIATELY. That's how good his is.

I've owned (2) 79 HO' and both have rare roof options. Oh, one more coincidence. When it bought my other 79 HO from Hurst it too had 38K miles on it just like the current one.

Yes the T-top cars from the factory were not kept count of as to which ones went on white/gold or black/gold cars. Since the Hurst Hatches were aftermarket installed its anyone's guess how many found their way onto a car

Thanks Allan. The new owner seemed very pleased with the car and I hope he enjoys it. He was an out of state buyer but had a brother that was about 90 minutes from me so all of the face to face dealings was with the brother. He was a knowledgeable guy and knew what he was looking at so his brother down south should be pleased.
The 54 will be staying as I've been told by the wife and daughters that I'm not allowed to sell it. So something will get done with it one of these days. Always tough when the family insists that a car be kept and built!

That would be a great project to get the whole family to participate in.

Craigslist is free but not the best outlay far pics and ect.
Ebay really when selling a car is not that bad far as costs. Last time I sold a little over a year ago was 50.00 listing fee and 5.00 or so pending picture options. Now if you list for 7 days and no sale then it will cost 50 or so to re-list.
But all things considered its not that expensive and as we all know most check ebay.
So my suggestion do both.

One thing I found odd with CL is that when I did a Google search for a 79 HO for sale I couldn't find my CL ad. I was trying to see how much exposure that ad had and it wasn't good. The ad I had here on CO was picked up. If I went to CL Baltimore and searched in it for a Hurst Olds, my ad was there. Not sure why it wasn't getting picked up on a general Internet search. Being my buyer used to live in MD, he was specifically searching CL Baltimore and that was how he found my car.
