'71 442 Ebay - Beware
#2
His shill bidder, that's who. This is some strange wording ALL NUMBERS MATCH AS A 442, REAR END ALL BODY PARTS, CAR HAS BEEN KNOWN AS A 442 SINCE THE 70S DONT KNOW WHAT WAS DONE WITH VIN I BOUGHT THE CAR AS A 442 AND DONT KNOW OF IT BEING A CLONE BUT THIS CAR IS 100%
Car doesn't look half bad but when the guy peddles shyt like that it makes you doubt every word he says.

As was stated in the previous "this is a fake" thread, Can someone elaborate on what exactly is wrong with this car?
My assumption is that it's because it is an auto trans, but I wanted to be sure. Trying to become a more educated buyer while I look around for a good project car.
This one is way out of my price range, but it would be good to know as much info as possible for the ones I find that ARE in my range.
Thanks!

'71 442 was a separate model so you can decode it by the vin
http://www.v8cars.hu/oldsvin/decode.php
This comes up as a Cutlass S. For '68 ('69?) to '71 a 442 VIN should start with a "34".
Some give aways on this car - 442's came with automatics & manuals so that doesn't reveal anything. A 442 should have a rear bumper cut out for dual exhaust & the base of the trunk should have a thin stainless molding, not the cast piece that reads Oldsmobile.

ah, gotcha. Didn't see he had the vin posted there, and if he did post that, he's possibly not even aware that it's a fake, or he got taken, and he's trying to recoup his losses after finding out the truth.
Either way, it's not a true 442. Good to know those did come with the AT as well. Looks like a sharp car, but since it is a clone, not worth the price he's asking...
Thanks for the educated info. :-)

Jeff - to lots of people, for the right price clones are OK. Since that's probably phony bid, you could always contact him and offer a fair clone price. Nice looking car and prob runs great.
The hood is correct for a 442, it does have rear bumper cutouts and except for the thin side molding and the VIN, everything else looks right.

A 71 Cutlass hardtop built in Arlington, TX per the VIN.
A couple of things to note on it that says it's not a 442 externally:
As mentioned about the 70 burlwood applique on the glovebox (I think it was Rosewood for '71??) and fugged up 442 emblem placement, '71 442s did not have the chrome trim at the rockers, nor the wide potmetal trim on the trunklid.
This one does have 72 grilles along with a 72 center rocket in front. Or appears that way. '71's had an open backed rocket on the nose to allow body color to show through, where 72's had a black background behind the rocket.
It's not a terrible looking car, but it needs some TLC and Cutlass emblems on it.

1 - The C/S logo on the inside door panel. Would that be there on the 442 model? (I honestly don't know if this detail is correct or not.)
2 - The gap on the driver's door to the front fender. There's some paint wear on the leading edge of the door. Means they didn't get the gap/adjustment correct before laying the paint down, and once painted, it was too tight and scraped the inside edge of the fender. I made the same mistake on a repaint & assembly on one of my cars, so that issue always sticks out like a sore thumb to me.
3 - The gaps/finish on the headlights & hood vary greatly from side to side. If it was symmetrical, it wouldn't be such a huge deal if it was off a little, but since they are way out on both sides in different areas, it looks like some major bodywork was done to the front end. This brings into question the "laser straight" comment about the rest of the bodywork.

good eye Jeff - door panel should be plain (no logo) on 442

Ah, yes, on a convertible that would make sense. I thought we were still talking about the hard top. I must've missed that switch between cars.
The convertible also has 1970 inner door/quarter panels on it. Dash seems correct for 71 442 with woodgrain, 442 emblem and remnants of chrome perimeter trim piping remain. Well, the mounting pins anyway. Still doesn't mean squat. Where's the VIN? That will tell you in a heartbeat. At least the emblems look better positioned on the convertible.
Circa '71 442 SSI wheels would have totally chrome outer rim with no trim ring, as well as the grilles are different and 442 only has the "Oldsmobile" script on the front driver's side corner of the hood. Cutlass did not as the Oldsmobile emblem would be in the grille. Doesn't mean this all couldn't be altered even if it were a 442, but it's unlikely. It's also conveniently missing the trim around the wheel wells and the bottom trim piece on the trunk lip. Ironically, it doesn't have any rocker trim, either, but I'm thinking they didn't realize 442 didn't come with that rocker trim anyway. Probably ended up with the wheel well trim in some dumpster somewhere. And the 72 taillights don't do it for me.
Under the hood, the SBO isn't the only dead giveaway it's likely not a real 442. The voltage regulator on the firewall tells me this car has a 3367 VIN.
Overall a halfway decent looking car, but could use some work.
