‘70 442 on BaT

There is a 1970 442 currently for sale on BaT. Blue with silver stripes. Not my style but the car looks like it has a few original W parts on it. Red fender liners, intake manifold, heads ?

I thought K heads were mid-70s and mostly marine-use?

It has the KA heads on it, which I think were dealer replacements for the F heads. Joe P would know for sure.

Ka heads were the only over the counter replacement heads available after earlier heads were discontinued, and they are NHRA legal in stock. Many used in marine applications.

I have been following this auction - and particularly the comments section. BaT has taken the unusual step (more like a leap) of re-classifying a car which was originally put up for sale as a 442, to what now they have judged to be a W-30.

Have been wondering for days why nobody even thought to ask about the trans tag, trans ID and/or block stamping. Folks probably thinking "Don't ask and maybe the car can be bought for cheap". I'm not registered on BAT and thus don't comment there. Looking at the bids it looks like it still might go for "cheap". Then again, still quite a few hours to go.

I feel same, Patton. I read all the comments - appears straight-up decent documentation & validation. The heads may be a concern, wish he had a compression test &/or leak-down providing a little more clue on engine health, but he did say he does not.

Why doesn't the actual vin# match the pop or car part partials?

The pic(s) of the dash VIN plate don't show the whole VIN.....I believe there is a "7" there (can just make out part of another last digit in one or both of the pics).

I'll have to go look again - didn't study it super closely....is that what you're referring to Eric?

EDIT/ADD: Go look at the SECOND PIC of the dash VIN plate...the "7" appears to be there in that pic.

Unrelated to the VIN but interesting - Looks like a possibly superb pair of original red wells

Yeah, I was looking at the vin# with my phone, now that I see it on my laptop you're right about the missing "7"

Seller did pretty well in my opinion.

On a side note, this car is a 2nd week of May build. It’s wearing a OLDSMOBILE W-455 intake manifold. Should it not have the later OLDS W-455 intake manifold ?

Questions were raised about the VIN stamp.
