Any proof that the OAI is a factory option?
It could be a 442 with aftermarket or OEM OAI items added.
I see auto trans... if the tag on the RH side of the trans says OW 68 and the VIN stamp matches the car, THEN we got a bonafide 'W30

Ah Oh,
The inner fenders look too clean to be original but there certainly are a few things that would make it legit......
Better engine bay pics would sure help. Maybe a shot of the inside of the fenders

In 68 43 or so auto w-30s convertibles were made so the 300 and something number for hardtops might be in the ball park. There were def more manual cars made.
Yeah some engine compartment pics would be nice
If legit w-30 ??? Hope they didn't toss that original ow
Still slick looking car!!!

All:
Thanks for the comments so far; I"m an auctioneer, and not an Olds expert, os your comments have been informative. I've edited the comments to take out the production numbers, as they may have been in error.
I'm selling this car for an estate, and have relied in large part on info that was provided by the estate. The owner was a lifelong Oldsmobile man, and his family believes it to be a W-30, as he did. Unfortunately, he's not around to discuss it with. I do not make that warranty....certainly some features, but as best I can tell, a W-30 is difficult to authenticate. The vanity license tag is the registered tag.
Thanks for the info. Keep it coming!

Here's a suggestion - curious what others think:
Based on this thread, the car *could* be a real W-30, but simply may not have docs. Advertising it as "believed to be a W-30" or "W-30 without docs" is honest, and certainly could attract more attention than merely saying it's a "1968 4-4-2."

I'd want to do more research before I felt comfortable calling it a W-30. I don't see any W-30 equipment on that car that couldn't have been bought as a reproduction at The Parts Place.

The air cleaner is def a repop
the shroud is 69/70
Rafe, red wells appear to be repop
finding out the rear ratio would help as w-30s only came 342,391's from factory
potential dealer installed 433
in other words if it has a 308 or 323 you are looking at 442
I looked at pics cannot make out letter on the heads. W 30 heads had the letter D and 442s had the letter C.
This alone will prove a lot along w tranny code and rear ratio.

To clarify, I believe 4.33s were a factory-offered gear that was installed at the dealer, rather than something that the customer bought from the selling dealer.

Oh great piece ty
which now I remember there is a 68 w-30 in Ct and recall talking to second owner and him specifically stating that when he took ownership the original 391 center was in the trunk post 433 installation.
Now trying to remember (or go thru my notes) if the same practice was carried out in 69 far as the 433

Of course, the exact sub-model and trans configuration lead one to the various production figures as well.
Is the original trans or any part of it still available, at the shop or whatnot?
Believing it is a real W30 is one thing; proving it is and/or convincing a buyer it is... another story. Sellers tend to want to believe that their item is the best available, and therefore worth more than similar more common units.
Alas, w/o a build sheet, broadcast sheet, protecto-plate [glove box], OW trans stamped with the car's VIN derivative, or similar documentation, assertions that it is an original W30 are speculation at best.
A more accurate and honest description would be "a known factory 442 with the following W30 parts..."
Have an Olds expert look at the car and discern which if any of the W30 pieces are correct factory items, and which are obviously reproductions. Evidently we already have a repro air cleaner spotted, with doubts about the fender liners.
Heads casting ID and dates
Water pump casting and date
Intake casting and date
fuel pump app #
exhaust manifold casting ID and dates
Final drive ratio, stamped codes, dates
CARB AND DISTRIBUTOR app numbers and dates
all these can tell a lot about whether it's an assembly of various parts.... or a mainly factory issue configuration
Many more details can also be looked at- radiator tag, stabilizer bars, etc. etc. etc.

Okay in 69 same practice carried out w regards to 4.33 when ordered

Oh how disrespectful, Mr. Two Posts
"buyer beware" - how utterly appropriate to this particular thread
We had a "W30- er, ah, maybe, we think we heard once maybe" therefore 1 of 3, such built, all of which Your favorite Celebrity boinked in, or so we think...
So the facts are set forth that it is a provable [barring shenanigans] 442 with what appears to bea host of incorrect / reproduction add-on W30 parts. The single proving VIN stamped component is conveeeeniently MIA [trans].
My input was desgined to prevent truth decay and inform both admittedly clueless seller and any potential buyer of what is known and what can be discerned with more inspection.
And, your input serves to..... what?
[READER beware, perhaps. Get your knee high poop boots on]

So, if you order the 4.33's, they are dealer installed, but as the customer ordered them from the factory, it then appears on the window sticker as any other option would? I ask because my '69 W31 is a factory 4.33 car, and it is listed on the window sticker, but are you saying that it was still dealer installed and not factory installed?
pm me your email and can share what Kurt sent me
he has done extreme homework on this

Hello all, I thought you might be curious about this much talked about Black 442. I just bought it from someone that Rafe sold it to back in 2015. I bought it as just a 442. The seller never mentioned that it was believed to be a W30. Ive had some people look at it and there is no proof that it was born a W30 so far. I even looked behind the rear seat for a broadcast card with no luck. All these things have been replaced or are missing:
(((((A build sheet, broadcast sheet, protecto-plate [glove box], OW trans stamped with the car's VIN derivative, or similar documentation )))
ive bern told to investigate engine compartment fastening holes to the firewall and maybe a return line from the fuel pump.
I’m new to all this stuff so still learning.
Im curious about the history of the car but don’t care if it’s W30 or not. I still love this car and it’s a life long keeper for me. —Billy
