An odd bird. The base transmission offering. For someone that didn't want to spring for either the floor shift, or an automatic. I've seen a few similar optioned cars in New Mexico yards over the years.
1. '66 Chevelle SS - 396 roller, but had AC and was Powerglide. UGGH. was 500 dollars cash, twelve bolt still under it, but had no money or space at the time.
2. '68-'69 Torino fastback - had the appearance, but was 302 2V with three on the tree. WEIRD.
3. '71 Impala coupe, with all trims, but had NO AC and was three on the tree. 250 L-6. Wish had caught that one, before it was in processed at the El Paso pick a part it wound up in. Had only 49 K miles.
Guessing most of these type of cars were converted, usually cobbled into floor shift set ups. There used to be a cottage industry selling inexpensive three speed floor shifters. Believe Hurst's was "Indy" shift, or something along those lines.

2. Nothing weird about it, that was the base V-8 offering.
3. Agree, probably a low take rate for the base 6/3-speed by 1971, but away from the deep South, only about 10-15% of these cars were ordered with A/C.
The Hurst 3-speed floor shift conversion was indeed called the Indy Shifter. I know, because my dad put one in his '62 Nova.

The canadian market may have been different.

True, but surprisingly one of the quicker 442 setups. Still, almost nobody wanted them.
As the guys have mentioned this vehicle is missing a lot of 442 identifiers. In addition to what has been said. It has non 442 tailight lenses, as well as not having the blacked out trunk lid molding.
Big time !
