JF did not use 4GC. Makes me wonder if it's one of the conversion cars. Be interesting to see how that aftermarket airconditioner was mounted to the turbo engine too, which again leans toward a 4-barrel conversion car.

I believe that is a 62, not a 63.

The car is definitely a 62 and definitely an original Jetfire as all the trim and the Turbo Rocket Fluid tank are in place. The carb is not original. As Glenn points out, this is likely one of the cars that had the turbo pulled off and a 4bbl installed.

I still think if Oldsmobile had dropped the CR to the 9.0 range on the turbo cars they'd have been better accepted.

Sure, the methanol injection sounded high-tech for the time and fit right in with Oldsmobile's space age advertising. It also actually worked as long as the Jetfire owner remembered to keep the Turbo-Rocket Fluid tank filled. But when fuels like Sunoco 260 and Phillips 66 Flite-Fuel couldn't keep a Jetfire engine from detonating under boost without the methanol, someone in Oldsmobile Engineering should have said hold up, time to regroup. Instead, they recalled the cars and converted them to 4-barrel induction, losing the technological innovation and advantage they'd developed.

In the meantime, Chevrolet Engineering realized this and dropped the Turbo Corvair CR from 9.25:1 to 8:1, and it worked better than the Turbo-Rocket.☹

Maybe they could have used two head gaskets and it would have dropped the compression enough. I could see a tech bulletin to do that.
