1986 Olds 442 - not mine

Looks clean. Asking $21k. Not sure on mileage?

Clean? Yes. Presents fairly well? Yes. $21K? JMO, but that's a long shot.

Under the hood the hardware looks all original (exception of the rubber bits obviously) with the only replaced parts seem to be the A/C compressor and appears to have a R134a conversion, and the eared rad cap. Should be a round RC-27.

Good thing is IMO, is that the former Ohio car- based on the license plate- got rust-proofed at Ziebart or something similar. You can see the plugs in the door sill and door shell. That likely helped if this car had seen any Ohio winters early on. I'm amazed it is one of the few cars available that has a front license plate holder. These are usually broken due to age, vibration, and the way they attached them under strain. They make repros, but can't tell if that's the case here.

I'd still like to see under the car. It even has the little original finger pull plastic piece on the rear license plate. Interior looks all original and in good shape as well.

The only thing that bothers me on this one is that for whatever reason, it appears to have factory gold stripes, but incorrect "442" decals on it. The door decals are slightly larger than the trunk and front bumper decals, but in this case, they used door sized decals everywhere, and incorrect. Front bumper decal even looks stranger than the rest of them. I strongly suspect this may have been a "stripes up" repaint. At the distance they took the pictures, it's hard to tell. Paint does appear decent, though. But if it wasn't a repaint, why replace all the 442 decals? Which doesn't make it bad. But should take the price down a notch if it is. No mileage given either. If it's a 10K mile car, or 70K mile car, that should be reflected in the price. The stick-on "Oldsmobile" emblem on the trunk is gone, so that is an easy and relatively cheap fix, but they look strange to me without it.

Font for all exterior 85-87 442 decals should appear as so (door decal shown):

Just a note on 85-87 442 interiors, each year 442 had a different seat fabric (no vinyl availability after 1985) pattern and the 1986 is sort of an odd bird. It has the same pattern as 1985 442 door panels, but the seats have more of a pocked look to the pattern and sort of diagonal/basketweave look to it. HARD AS F**K to find that fabric. Not that other years are any easier.

If it is a repaint, it looks pretty good. Toss about $150 worth of NOS 442 decals and new Oldsmobile emblems on it, fix the other minor issues, and it would be a very nice driver for sure. It does have somewhat strange options, with seemingly power trunk, rear defog, cruise, tilt, but no power seat or power windows. Hoping it has G80 posi, but likely not. Wish there was a SPID sticker pic to see.

I like it, and if I wanted an 86 442 and wasn't particular about options, my offer would be around 15K tops depending on the mileage based solely on the pictures and assuming no frame/underside issues. If higher than 30K miles, the offer would go down accordingly. Just my initial assessment. Yours may differ.

69HO43 - You literally took the words out of my mouth. Like every word.

While this car does appear to be clean, and I like that it's the original owner, I too suspect it has been painted at some point and the very first thing I noticed was the incorrect 442 decals. The one decal in the drivers door jamb looks funny too but it's not clear enough to tell. Makes you wonder... I too feel the $21,000 is a HUGE reach. For some reason the ASKING price of G body cutless' and 442's has basically doubled in the last year. I can't figure out why but for the most part they just sit around for months and months without selling.
The interior does look very nice but no power windows, locks, seat, etc does knock down the desirability of it, at least for me.

Below is a link to his craigslist ad. Don't let the recent date fool you, he has had the car for sale many months and has re-upped the ad several times. It does list the mileage at just under 36,000 which is low for the year but still doesn't justify the asking price, in my opinion.

And so my search for an '86 continues.

The original laminated safety information decal, made by Avery, has a function of basically "ruining" all the typed information in the gray adhesive window if removal is attempted. They were tamperproof labels. That one got pulled off, and the white color area remained, rendering the label useless. It appears this one just got peeled off and the crap that was left never was removed. Over the years they could remain pristine, or sometimes they degenerate into unreadable mess and start to peel, and many times people just yank them off. Just depends on what the car seen in its life I guess. The tire placard still remains and looks decent still. So far, those decals cannot be reproduced exactly how Avery did it, and when I asked them about that process, they never responded. I like that the look can be duplicated without the tamperproof part of it, so those decals aren't an issue, really.

I also think its overpriced. Maybe $14k tops

There was a low mileage (39k) 1986 Olds 442 in excellent condition that sold for $11k a year ago that was a great buy.

Some people with these G Body cars are asking for some insane prices. I also saw a 1987 442 and the seller was asking $26k for one with 40k miles with peeling paint.

These cars end up sitting for sale for months or years. They are hoping for that 1 in a million buyer who will pay that outrageous amount.

69HO43 - another great call on the safety decal. That's what I was assuming but I am not able to see it that well on my monitor. I just knew something didn't look correct.

pettrix - the '86 442 that you linked in your last post, I was actually in negotiations to purchase last summer. It is a beautiful car and has almost all of its original paint and all original decals as far as I could tell. Something came up at home that we needed the money for quickly and I wasn't able to buy it. I contacted the seller over the winter when we recouped but it had sold in late August for $10,300. I am still kicking myself about that one. The car was only an hour and a half from me, was in great condition, and the seller was a really nice guy. he sent me a bunch of pictures and videos and was very easy to deal with and a pleasure to talk to. It would have been the perfect buy for me. That particular car did not have cruise, which I thought was strange, but I could have lived with it.

As I said earlier, I am not sure what happened to the asking prices of G body Oldsmobiles but as you said, they end up sitting around for many, many months with no takers.
With all of that said, I am still on the hunt.

Wow, that was a very nice car and an awesome sale price of $10,300

That car looked solid and low mileage to boot. Too bad the deal fell through.
