Small thing, but I'm sure you know the 442 emblem on the dash is incorrect? All 1972 models had Cutlass, or Cutlass Supreme on the glove box door.
Does it also come with radio and 8 track? I see the lower valence is split for the 8 track player.
I'm guessing you're not the original owner of this car, because one of the biggest giveaways that this is not a factory 442 is the rocker chrome. That was a delete item on every 442 produced. So this can't be a W29 car, or a W30. The W30 would be easy to validate simply by the X code in the VIN.

No, not the original owner.
Well aware of the 442 glove box emblem, rocker chrome, and W-30 side stripes. I took those liberties. Since it's not a W-30, those minor changes have essentially no effect to it's value, but I like them. I had the rocker chrome laying around from an old project. Sorry, I didn't receive the 8-track/radio with the car.
Without the build sheet, and unless it is an X-code W-30, it can be difficult to discern a 1972 442 since it became an option on a Cutlass. This one is a base "S" model with "U" code 455. It also has the FE2 suspension, rallye pac, and Hurst Dual Gate, so from my experience, I do believe it's a real 442. Just don't think the non-W-30 values would justify someone going to all that trouble. I've heard about dealers making these conversions, and I can't say whether this is one of those or not.
Anyhow, your point is well taken that there is, and should be, some element of doubt without a build sheet on a "U" code model. Unfortunately, I never received any docs with the car. Any potential buyer should satisfy themselves about the authenticity and condition of this car. (There's a lot of good info on this site as well as 442.com and Wild About Cars to help with that).

If you have a chance (assuming the interior hasn't been messed with) see if you can find one of the broadcast cards for the car. I found 3 in mine. one under the front seat, one under the carpet, and one in the rear seat springs. If you find one of those, they all relate to the cars body number which is shown on the cowl tag. It should have W29 in box 12 on all the broadcast cards associated with the car. Here's an example:

That would prove beyond doubt that the car is a 442. FYI, not all U code Cutlass models were ordered as 442's. Many of the W29's came with L32 and L34 engines. Just trying to help you with finding some authentication that would document the car.
