Hi All,
I have a 1969 Ninety-Eight LS 4-Door For sale. It has a 350 -4bbl, HEI distributor, A/C, new dual exhaust, power windows and power seat. Passenger front door was hit and passenger rear door has a dent also. The doors are solid , no holes. Fenders are solid, small bubble lower drivers side and passenger side has no bubbling or holes. Trunk lid and hood are solid. The underbody looks to have been undercoated at some point. The front seat has the handles and make-up vanity in the back of it. The door panels and rear seat are in great shape. The front seat, at the drivers side, has a whole in it. The car runs. It is located in Chicago.

Can't be too many of those around with a 350! Is it original to the car?

 

It appears to be. I bought it from a gentleman that brought the car up from Mississippi in the '90's from his grandparents.

Yeah, the 98 didn't come with a 350 in '69. Are you sure it's not a 455?

 

No '69 98 came with a 350. The only engine offered was a 365 hp version of the 455.

My guess is this car has a 455 and the guy who brought it from Mississippi didn't know it.

Unless, of course, the engine was swapped at some point. Maybe someone wanted the 455 for another car which originally had a 350, like a Cutlass, and put the Cutlass engine in this car so it could be more easily sold.

 

+1 to all. 98s had the top-of-the-line engine, which in '69 was the 10.25:1 455 (okay, the Toro engine was always just a tiny bit hotter...).

You couldn't get a 98 with a smaller engine if you'd wanted to, because then it wouldn't have been a 98.

The casting number at the oil filler is 395558. Based on this it is a '67-70 350. It is a 350 and not a 455, I have a 455 in my '69 Delta. They're easy to tell apart. May have been swapped at some point.

Darn right. Gramps would proudly tune up the car twice a year, and replace the points and condenser annually, placing the old parts in the boxes that the new parts came out of, and putting them back on the shelf in the garage, "just in case."

Maybe he proudly pulled the 455 in the '70's during the first gas crisis, and put that under the shelf in the same garage?

 

if thers's still a little dash mounted compass and maybe a corn cobbed pipe stuffed under the clear vinyl seat coves...you may be right

 

Hey all,
Pulled the rear seat and found the build sheet or what's left of it. It's discolored and torn anybody have reference on what each line is supposed to be? I also checked for any stamp on the block and couldn't find any.

How about posting a photo of it? Sometimes what people think are build sheets aren't actually build sheets. This is especially true for your car as all 1969 98s were built in Lansing, and the Lansing plant is famous for being strict about not leaving build sheets in the cars. What you found might be more along the lines of something called a "broadcast card." Showing us what it looks like, even if you're only showing the piece you pulled out, will help.

 

It may be just a build card it looks like slip that may have had multiple copies attached. Sorry for the poor quality..

 

Yes, that is a broadcast card, and, you're right, it looks like hell.

But don't apologize. That's they way they often look after so many years. People who find these kinds of things more or less intact are the lucky ones.

 

Here's what a fully-intact broadcast card looks like. It's from my '73 Custom Cruiser. Those pencil markings were made by the original owner.

They were about 6.5mb each, which would explain why they were a bit tough to upload.

I have a few notes on what I've observed:

1. Yup. Not a 455, definitely a 350, and by the looks of it about a '76 350
   The blue paint looks original and it's got a late carb.
2. That car's a mess. Are you sure it runs, or is that just the sound of the mice living inside?
3. When swapping engines, someone smashed the A/C plenum, then patched it with some sort of tinfoil insulation.
4. The paper towel in the P/S pump is a nice touch.

Finally, I think that the guy from Mississippi who said it was his grandparents' car wasn't being entirely truthful.

Thanks for the info. I looked in that exact spot on the block pad and there is no number there. It does run, surprisingly, pretty well. The guy I bought it from had a "shop" do the HEI conversion and install an alarm. Well the "shop" must have been one of his buddies weekend job. You are correct the Heads are 8's.

That engine came with HEI from the factory.

If you look at the number stamped into the oil fill tube, the first digit will be the year.

There are no numbers on the oil filler tube. I power washed the engine to check for the numbers. The picts were after i washed it and degreased it. Before I washed it, there was no paint color visible.

Wonder if it was a service replacement or a marine motor (though as far as I know, the marine motors had numbers, too)?
