1969 Hurst Olds - $25000 (Ocean Park, WA)
"Selling a 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile.
One of 906 made. Very Rare.
Factory Air.
Comes with many extra parts (390:1 posi rear end, 350cid 9.5 engine with dual 450 Holly carburetors and an Offenhauser intake).
Body is very straight.
Don't let this one get away."
=============================
Three hundred and ninety to one- That's one hell of a rear end ratio. Must have a ring gear about 800 inches in diameter. :-)
Decimal points do matter.

thats all correct...on trim and vin, they are different on the 69 ho's....but made in lansing and a 50-50 code and a 930 code is all correct...the cowl tags dont match the actual vin...both my HO's are that way too if I recal..and the production date is on spec

So in other words, the 1969 Hurst/Olds has the 442 model designation in VIN, but the cowl tag has a Cutlass model designation - is that correct? Very interesting, does anyone know the reason why that was done?

I think lansing built cars were done that way, dont' quote me on it but I can go check both my 69 HO's and Im thinking only the 344 first few numbers were on the vin, the cowl was different....

cowl has cutlass model due to Fisher the way the tagged them in 68 and 69. Many 442's also have these different designations regarding vin vs cowl tag

In these cases both cowl and vin revealed 87 and of course the other body styles . So in essence far upper left of ST 69 then 3 and pending what Fisher did far as identifying cutlass or 442.
So the closet resemblance you would see in a cowl tag and vin would be the cowl tag reading ST 69 3 4487 and so on. The vin of course 344879m....

It's my understanding that the cowl tag is applied by Fisher. Since there are no changes needed to the actual body between a Cutlass and a 4-4-2, the body tag shows a Cutlass model number. Oldsmobile then installs the necessary suspension and body components that make up a 4-4-2. Olds then installs a VIN tag with the proper 4-4-2 model number.

So did all of the 68/69 442's have a Cutlass model code number in the Cowl Tag number, and the 442 model number in the VIN? Or was this done only to the cars destined to be a '68 or '69 Hurst/Olds?
I think all of the 70/71 442's had the actual model code number for a 442 in the Cowl Tag number and the VIN.

No not all 68 and 69 442s had a cutlass code.

My apologies. For clarity, I should have said "many 68-69 4-4-2's....". Here's a thread that will help a bit:

Interesting, never knew about the 68/69 cowl tags. I guess no one ever figured out why some 442's had the "correct" model number on the cowl tag while others had the Cutlass model number.
I'm guessing that Fisher figured out how to determine which body was to be a Cutlass or a 442 starting with the 1970 model year, with the correct matching model number stamped on the cowl tag - or did Oldsmobile start stamping the cowl tags that year?
