1965 F-85 Sedan California/Arizona Car 330 4bbl Hi Comp
Hello, Time to thin the herd. I am going to be selling one of my cars that I just wont be getting around to. Its a 65 F-85 4 dr. Sedan with the 330 4bbl hi compression v8 and jetaway automatic.
I bought/rescued this car last year. It was brought into a local repair shop almost ten years ago with a miss. The one valve cover was removed and it was discovered it has a bent push rod. The customer didnt want to fix it and sold it to the shop. They never did and so I bought it last year. Car does turn over has clean, bright green antifreeze and red trans fluid that appears not to have leaked out. They did drain the gas. The valve cover is off but all removed parts are in the trunk.Car is complete.
it also has the original dealer folder and manual along with a hand written build sheet I found under the seat. It has no rust and shows 18000 miles which themes with a hand written mileage log from the 60s until it was parked. Needs headliner and some seat work. Body is straight and clean. Looks like it had some repair on the drivers 1/4 years ago that was done well. Its located in Phoenix AZ and I'm asking $1900 OBO.

Is the rust in the trunk floor all the way through or is just the paint lifting up? How is the front end of the car all original sheetmetal? Any damage or rust issues to the radiator core support? Especially around battery box area. Underside looked pretty clean. I’m mainly interested in no rust cars or cars that haven’t had any substantive body work from impacts or collision. Sorry for the hit or miss communication. My mom passed away a couple weeks ago like I mentioned so helping my dad deal with that. She had been sick off and on but her death was unexpected. We planned on having another 5-10 years with her. Also, I’m on lock down/self confinement because of being in contact with the corona virus. My quarantine should be lifted by the 8th. I see the doctor again on the 10th. Separated from my family since the 20th. Jim
The trunk is not rusted through just a bit of surface rust. There is no rust anywhere else on this car its extremely clean and straight. California/AZ car. I have attached some more pictures. The back seat is out. I removed it when I bought the car to clean the interior. It will be put back in before it leaves here. The lights all work too and it will turn over. Electrics seem good. Fluids are good too. It would be a great daily driver or awesome parts car. I had an offer to part it out but its so original and complete other than the Quadrajet carb I would hate to see it taken apart.
A Quadra jet will not bolt onto a 65 330 intake. Are you sure it’s a 330? Or has the intake been replaced. The master cylinder has been replaced too. For a car with 18,000 miles I think that’s odd. That and it having been repainted I think it has 118,000 miles on it.

Sure would bolt up, secondaries would not have full flow, moisture could cause corrosion in brake parts.
Just to close out this post, I did buy the 65 F85 4 dr and had it shipped to Florida. It arrived end of last week. At first glance it appeared solid, but unfortunately contents of message #5 lacking some key details. Classic car market is built on trust between sellers and buyers. Seller and I did discuss the discrepancies/inconsistencies I found upon arrival without resolution.
Well okay, what did you find wrong exactly? Was this a case of the seller otherwise not knowing what was wrong or blatant misrepresentation? And does it change your plans for the car?

Location, North Florida....regarding the car I just bought it may change my decision. Depends on if I can find a rust free complete 4 door. I don’t care if it runs or not although that would be nice. Doesn’t matter interior condition as long as no physical body/ metal modifications. I don’t care how bad the paint is as long as it’s not hiding collision, or rust repair bodywork. Prefer it to be worn out faded original paint so no surprises, or well cared for original paint that shows its age. No rust mean: none in the floors, trunk pan, lower rear quarters, around windows. I’m not talking about surface rust or rust staining. I’m talking about the kind of rust you can stick a screw driver through. I’m talking about rust that has been covered in bonds and/or fiberglass then smoothed out some. I’m talking about rust that was cut out and covered with a metal panel covered in whatever to smooth out the seams. My intent of the post was to highlight no matter how specific the questions the response can be left up to someone’s else’s opinion or interpretation of what “no” means. Example: you call up a new car dealer that’s 100 miles away because they have a blue car you’re interested in. You drive 100 miles to see the car and when you get there, you see a white, red, and green car. You asked to see the blue one and dealers says we don’t have one....you say wait a minute you said you had a blue car for me to look at and I drove 100 miles to see it. Their response is well the green car has blue hues in it...We can order you a blue one. No, green is not blue. Just like heavy rust under the carpet (stick screw driver through) and rust covered in bondo or fiberglass in the trunk isn’t “Rust Free” or no rust”. Long point being what the seller implies and the buyer understands can be miles apart. I try not to make people take 100s of pictures and ask a million questions because it gets painful. Just like I don’t ask folks to pull the carpet, because its work. But as a seller you can at least roll it back some and verify what you say is at least factual. Is the car a basket case no...if I was local I would have negotiated to cover the expense of a trunk and partial floor pan, but when you add shipping costs into the mix....it gets frustrating and costly.
Unfortunately, I've had similar experiences. Buyers either are clueless or completely dishonest. A number of years ago, I was looking to buy a rust free 442. I specifically asked folks only to offer cars with either virgin metal or rust properly repaired with butt-welded metal panels. I paid for people to send me photos. I got pictures where the bubbling fiberglass was obvious. I once drove 12 hours to look at what was advertised as a rust free shell. When I got there, I was able to push a screwdriver through the rusted rear quarters. I've previously documented the pinchweld rot around the roof windows in the "rust free" Vista that I bought from Reno.
If there is ever another chance of me buying another car unseen, I will get one of you guys here, a friend, relative etc. that lives reasonably close to the car and go personally check it out and when your there Ill be on the phone with you. I would gladly pay you for the service! I bought my 64 F-85 8 years ago from Ohio site unseen from evil-bay, had it shipped to Dallas. It was a rust bucket not near what the owner described. So after I cooled off,( a week) I decided to learn how to weld and let the tear down begin. Otherwise, I would have either parted it out or had it hauled off to a charity. My attorney friend told me it wasn't worth the time, aggravation, stress and $$$ trying to collect the $2,500 invested plus the shipping costs. So life goes on and now the car is my master piece, never tore a car completely down to every nut and bolt and re-assembled it the way I wanted it be. It was like putting together a large model car. It's all good.
I followed your thread...a unique car like yours is certainly worth the time and effort to go to the level of detail you did. Learning is priceless as they say. But, your point is you didn’t get what you paid for. My point as well. Car has some positives, so not a wreck by any means. It’s mostly complete and maybe even run if not for the push rod issue. Several areas of body damage and repair work were clearly identified and I was good with those. I was good with car not running (bent valve push rod jammed in the head), good with the trashed interior, and good with the worn out paint. All were discussed and I was onboard. I was going to redo most if not all that anyway. It was a trade off for finding a rust free car. Figured I’d save time, money, and effort not chasing rust and replacing panels. But, that’s not the case.
Joe, Thanks for sharing your story with me. Maybe this should be a new section for buyers and sellers to highlight issues with cars they bought or sold long distances so future buyers and sellers can learn and be more aware especially if just starting out in the hobby. Not sure how to get the moderator to do that? Maybe name it the pitfalls, follies, and fairytales centered on both good and bad experiences. Maybe create a 10 commandants to go buy?
