Well, I still have it........

It has clicked over 42k on the odo. I added a new headliner with visors, Fusick upper and lower rad. hoses, repro rad. cap, and new lenses on the interior lights.

Somebody buy this thing! I need a motor in my 442.

I have to ask, why is the mirror on the fender like that?

 

I believe that was the way they were originally mounted back then. I don't know if it was remote controlled, but if it wasn't, you couldn't adjust it without stopping the car and getting out.

 

the drivers side mirror is remote control from the left side of the dash between the edge and the speedometer housing.

 

Does anyone know if that was the only year and model Olds did that on? I don't remember ever seeing that before (not that that means anything, I barely remember what I had for breakfast today).

I don't know specifically, but I don't think it was a one-year-only thing. As Oldskeeper says, the mirror, when mounted this way, was remote-controlled. I'm sure that remote-control mirrors were far less common back in the late '50s and early '60s than they were even later in the '60s and then later than that, so mirrors mounted like this were not seen very often. That probably explains why you've never seen one. I've never one, either, except in photos.

 

I have several of these mirrors in my stock in different states of repair and have seen many on starfires and 98s, I prefer the dual mount mirrors one on the drivers door and one on the passenger door ( the passenger door was an option in 63 for full size)My custom sport coupe and both my convertables have them and my stock of front fenders the left one has those holes for remote mirror that will need to be filled when I need them.

I love the car, but I cannot afford to give it the attention it needs. You get a ton of looks tooling that thing down the road, though!
