I should have left the car alone til the spring but No...I had to go playin with it again today while the decent weather lasts.
Gonna clean the gunk off the grille. Took it off, hit it with degreaser and went to town with ( not proper tools, of course) toothbrush and bottle brush....you can see the results. I'm disgusted with myself.
I've read here of paints at hobby shops etc that I can touch this flat gray up with. Anyone have good results or alternatives ? UGH !

Well- look at it this way. You've prepped the surface for new paint.

Krylon Dull Aluminum was a near perfect match for factory silver-gray items, but it has become hard to find. What you want is a paint that will dry and not smear later, which a lot of metallic silvers will do. I'd go to an auto supply store with a body/paint department over say a hardware. Entirely possible they can mix you up the exact formula and put it in a spray bomb.

Is it possible to remove the grille from the car while you paint, so as to not get overspray all over everything?

Those are metal grills aren't they? Strip 'em down, detail sand and get them powdercoated. It will probably save a lot of headaches and grief. Do them in bright silver, then bring them home and carefully tape off the bright parts and paint them aluminum color.
