I finally found door handle gaskets I like. All the gaskets I have tried previously never fitted the way I thought they should and would start cracking and falling apart shortly after installing them. I bought a set of gaskets from the website:
At first the gaskets I received were made to fit a Chevelle but said to fit a 1969 Cutlass. They are not the same though. I talked to Jackie Olsen at Studio Hotrods and we figured out that the door handles are not shaped the same, even aftermarket ones are different. Jackie was more concerned with making me a happy customer than just refunding my money, like other companies would do. With her help I sent my original Cutlass door handles in along with the aftermarket handles I was using. Studio Hotrods then scanned the handles and sent me gaskets for both types of handles. The new gaskets are not flat like original, they are designed with a bead that wraps around the outside to give them a better look. I just installed mine this weekend and they look great. The next test is to see if they hold up over time as my car sits outside. The last set of of gaskets I put on from another vendor only lasted me four months before the started cracking and falling apart.
If you should want to buy gaskets for your car, I would call the order in, since the Oldsmobile gaskets are not on the website yet. You will need to know if your handles are original, which will have a sharp crisp angle on top of them or aftermarket which are more rounded. The aftermarket design gaskets are designed to fit Resto Parts brand door handles winch both Fusick and Original Part s Group sell.
I also noticed that Metro Moulded Parts have them. But they will probably only fit originals and they cost a lot more. With the cost of having the original door handles chrome plated, I think a lot more people are buying the aftermarket handles to keep cost down. Unfortunately it is easy to get upside down restoring an Oldsmobile, especially a four door hardtop such as me.
