I have a 72 cutlass supreme and I am wondering if it is possible to use front disc brakes set up from a 73 or newer cutlass or any other gm car to replace the drums on my 72 ?

 

The only 1973 or 74 car with compatible front discs that I can think of off the top of my head would be the Nova. you are limited to 68-72 A bodies (to include the grand Prix and Monte Carlo), the Nova up to 1974.....and I think there may be one or two others. if you find one of those cars, remember to take the proportioning valve and its bracket, the booster, and the front hose brackets.

Additionally, you CAN convert your exsisting drum spindles to discs by machining the third hole to mount the caliper bracket (purchased aftermarket) and then you can buy everything else including an aftermarket proportioning valve.

Correct, John. 64-72 A-body, 67-69 F-body, and 68-74 X body all use the same spindles and disc brakes. The newer cars have spindles with different height, different ball joint taper, and different steering arm locations. You can swap the 77-90 B-body spindles with the appropriate ball joints, tie rod ends, and custom upper control arms, but there will still be bump steer due to the steering arm differences. By the time you do that, you could have bought the correct A-body brakes.
